Obama's approval is high — but the stimulus isn't as popular
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new national poll suggests that three out of four Americans approve of the job Barack Obama's doing as President — but the economic stimulus package he's trying to push through Congress is not nearly as popular.

Seventy-six percent of those quesioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday give President Obama a thumbs-up when it comes to the way he's performing his duties, with 23 percent disapproving of the way Obama's handling his job as president.

While the President puts on a full court press, the debate over the more than $800 billion bill, which includes increased government spending and tax cuts, appears to have split the public. A slight majority, 54 percent, favor the bill, with 45 percent opposed.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Survey was conducted Saturday and Sunday, with 806 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey's sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for the overall sample and plus or minus 6.5 percentage points for the breakdowns by party preference.

1. "three out of four is 75% but they can't have a number like that I guess"
umm - the line right after that one says 'Seventy six percent'.

Grammatically, you shouldn't start a sentence with a numeral (76), which is why they spelled it out. It means the same thing, though. :)

2. The stimulus is popular, but people don't understand it.
Hence the townhall today. Once people become more informed (i.e. stop getting all their information about the stimulus from the MSM and GOP), they will realize that they've supported it all along.

That's my prediction.

7. Unfortunately, I'm supporting it less and less.
I'm pretty irritated the 'Buy American' provisions have been yanked. Why should my tax money be used to create jobs in some other country, when the whole point of the package is to help our OWN economy? The people who demanded those provisions be removed are the exact same ones who got us into this mess to begin with, and who are benefiting from outsourcing.

'Free trade' shouldn't be required when it comes to government spending. If Canadian steel-makers need work, let Canadians pass their own stimulus package and build their own infrastructure.

3. A "slight majority" (54% - more than George W's "mandate") favor the stimulus. . .
and this, while the Republicans have held reigns for the media coverage of the bill.

5. And yet we also have this statistic:

"Sixty-four percent of those polled say the current bill being debated in the Senate would help the economy a lot or somewhat, with 36 percent feeling that the package would not help the economy much or at all."

6. It's very simple; govt spending = more jobs for We the People.
And a whole slew of other benefits as well, not least of which is improving our next-to-third-world infrastructures.

Or They the Idiots can continue on the same path as the last 8 years, as the Rushlic Party Of No wants.

Very simple.

8. Of course, the day before the vote
a majority is presented in the most negative way possible. Why don't they just say his stimulus bill has double digit disapproval. Have to draw a comparison with approval rating.

How bout this for a headline you fuck wad corpro-gandist; Obama's stimulus bill, twice as popular as republicans, and five times as popular as dick cheney.

9. The main reason that the Recovery Plan is getting kicked around
is the negative connotation that the terms 'stimulus bill' give it, invoking the failed economic tax rebate plans of previous repug admins.

It is not a stimulus bill, and we need to stop allowing traditional media, in all their pro-repug glory, to call it such. This is an economic recovery plan - the President and everyone in his administration calls it that - and we progressives should too. This will be a good plan once the HR reinstatement the strong oversight vernacular that those dolts in the Senate removed.

I'd like to see every diary, post, comment, etc., on every progressive site call this plan what the President calls it - the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act or the Recovery Plan or the Economic Recovery Plan. The bill itself is entitled the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Each time we say 'stimulus' or 'stimulus bill,' we are unconsciously defeating its passage and defeating ourselves.

Please stop using 'stimulus bill' since that terminology was abused by previous administrations, as were we abused by their stimulus bills which only took us and the rest of the world farther down the road to busted economics.

It is the Recovery Plan or the Economic Recovery Plan, not stimulus bill.

Call it what President Obama calls it and stop allowing sold-out traditional media hacks to define it differently than our president does. After all, they have no interest in the success of either the Recovery Plan or POTUS Obama. Most of them are still pulling down high five and six figure incomes. Failure of the new president with his new policies keeps them believing that they control the Beltway, despite the mandate we gave President Obama.

We still need to be more pro-active in helping President Obama to sell this Plan to the low information media and other citizenry. In fact, we need to be more pro-active and much more vociferous now that we've succeeded in getting our mandate.

:hi:

if'n I haven't before.

I have been trying to find out who first starting calling it "stimulus"-either way the Republicans (and MSM) have seized upon that to make the claim that anything that isn't stimulus (jobs) should not be part of the bill. This is a recovery bill-recovery all the things that should have been done over at least the last 8 years probably more like 28 years.

The simple basic functions of any government. Health (including safe economic health) of the population as well as creating nourished educated (trained or trainable) workforce. Obama mentioned "workforce" at least twice in the town hall today.

14. Thanks, underpants!
The majority of repugs are smooth brained, insensitive, callous, cold imbeciles - most 5 year olds know that any plan or program - be it safety nets or vouchers - that creates spending 'stimulates' the economy.

OTOH, because of the monumental failures of the previous tax cut stimulus plans, people find the term 'stimulus bill' unpalatable - even those C-Span crazies callers. I don't understand why people keep using it, and the only reason I can think of is that print, online and broadcast media continue to call it such, even when it is not. The bill itself is called "The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act." Y'all's girl, Maddow, just had the audacity to say that the plan/program has no name and that, during the presser, the president needed to use buzz words that we average folk could use to describe our terrible economicc dilemma.

That's another idiotic statement and goes to my previous post in which I said that traditional media want President Obama to fail and, therefore, attach negative 'buzz words' taken from Shrub's multi-lateral failures.

10. Understandable...
The citizens know how republicans have dealt with this catastrophe for the last eight years. Its their only frame of reference. When the party in power finds its in its own best interest to prove that "government isn't the solution - its the problem" by hiring the wrong people and switching off the usual oversight processes - then everything they do is doomed to failure before it begins. The people have an understandable skepticism of government's ability to fix anything. We will have to show them the difference Democrats make - the difference in their lives when talented people use the levers of government to improve the quality of life. THEN - they will approve. THEN the republican obstructionists will find themselves up shit creek without a paddle or a prayer.
