Pro-Pot Lobby Rips Kellogg Co. For Dropping Phelps
Source: Associated Press

(02-10) 14:21 PST NEW YORK, (AP) --

Snap, crackle ... pot?

Bursting with indignation, legions of marijuana advocates are urging a boycott of Kellogg Co., including all of its popular munchies, for deciding to cut ties with Olympic hero Michael Phelps after he was photographed with a pot pipe.

The leader of one of the biggest legalize-pot organizations, the Marijuana Policy Project, called Kellogg's action "hypocritical and disgusting," and said he'd never seen his membership so angry, with more than 2,300 of them signing an online petition.

"Kellogg's had no problem signing up Phelps when he had a conviction for drunk driving, an illegal act that could actually have killed someone," said Rob Kampia, the group's executive director. "To drop him for choosing to relax with a substance that's safer than beer is an outrage, and it sends a dangerous message to young people."

Also urging a boycott were the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Students for Sensible Drug Policy and the Drug Policy Alliance. They encouraged their members to contact Kellogg to vent their views.

I have to wonder how effective this boycott will be. Will college kids really be able to resist eating a big bowl of Frosted Flakes, several Pop Tarts and a handful of Honey Smacks after a night of passing the bong around?

General Mills makes Wheaties-he was on Kellogg's Corn Flakes. General Mills doesn't pay their Champions so they couldn't have dropped his contract.

As a former employee, I feel the need to defend a company that actually treats their employees well.

Drunk driving kills people. Smoking a bong in someone's house doesn't.

Of course, if he'd smoked the bong and then driven off, that would be a different story.

Well that was where we headed back in the 70's. I'll never forget the night we found a place with ten burgers for a couple of dollars. Heaven. God I miss those stoner nights.

Now that I think of it, I remember climbing on to the roof and having a hamburger war with my friends. :)

Regardless of what one may think of the economic moral or legal aspects of the story, what dramatically hits me in the irony-bone is the implication that a bunch of pot smokers organizing a protest... that oughta turn out real good.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm a horrible, horrible person for satirizing pot-smokers (of which, I may or may not include myself in that number). I keep forgetting that there's a few demographics out there that we just aren't allowed to poke fun at... too uncivil, I suppose. Much too undignified. I'm just saying, what you're describing is a worn out stereotype of a pot smoker that perpetuates the idea that smokers can't organize or accomplish much. There are a lot of smokers out in the professional community that would not fit into that stereotype.

I have no problem with you poking fun. It's that you're implying talking about it is useless. At least that's how I took your last sentence.

Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 10:21 PM by LanternWaste
Comparing myself? Stop projecting, kid. I merely took the three greatest satirists I know of off the top of my head to illustrate the absurdity of holding righteously onto sacred cows with a dogmatic defense in which even simply humor is seen as an subtle and nefarious attack on a lifestyle choice.

And I'm sure you're right... I should expand my circle of stonier pals to include bankers, lawyers and doctors who may take a toke before work. Problem is, my Friends Card is completely full right now, but should one open up, I'll put an index card on the bulletin board of my local bank, "Professional Stoner friends Wanted-- Must make 150k/ Year or Above Be Able to Laugh At Themselves and Understand Satire"

I made no implications-- that you made an inference of that nature is completely on you.

People always laugh about poking fun at sacred cows until one of theirs gets targeted.

It wasn't a characterization-- it was a silly joke. Last demographic in the world I'd ever think about suggestion "lighten up" to.

Some people have their lives ruined by religion-- I assume in the name of moral consistency you never, ever joke about religion either, yes ? Or maybe particular cows are more sacred than other.

Seems like there's more than enough sanctimony to go around these days...

65. Silly jokes are not a problem, like I said.
And I probably wouldn't have noticed your little statement at the end of your first post if you hadn't had that little run-in with the other poster.

That was when I noticed you saying

"Now, back to your regularly scheduled righteous soliloquies about decriminalization."

That's a little joke? Hmm...ok, if you say so. And if you want to characterize me as having sacred cows or whatever, go ahead.

Sometimes joking has to be done the proper way or it ain't funny, I guess. Do what you want, I'm done.

67. see that's what I mean
"....whatever better 'validates' me"??

There's been ample opportunity for this to end in a civil manner. How about it?

even if it isn't necessarily destined for posterity ;)

you're so right about that peculiar human tendency to delight in the goring of oxen belonging to others...and then suddenly develop a paper-thin skin when the ox is one's own

57. You obviously don't know any actual "potheads."
Potheads aren't always lazy, nor are they always spacy the way you describe.

Once they build up a tolerance, you'd be hard pressed to even determine whether they're high or not. During a phase many years ago I was pretty much always baked, and the people I worked with/for never had a clue. It's easy to hide if you know how. I never had a problem being completely functional, and I was actually considered an overacheiver.

I'm not alone in this. However, people that use rarely just might laugh at anything and eat everything in sight.

95. For fuck's sake, educate yourself. IT DOESN'T MAKE EVERYONE LAZY.
One would think you've never even MET a smoker.

One word for you; sativa.

Once you've learned what that is, then you'll actually know what you're talking about.
