Report: 'Dirty bomb' parts found in slain man's home
Source: Bangor Daily News (Maine)

BELFAST, Maine — James G. Cummings, who police say was shot to death by his wife two months ago, allegedly had a cache of radioactive materials in his home suitable for building a “dirty bomb.”

According to an FBI field intelligence report from the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center posted online by WikiLeaks, an organization that posts leaked documents, an investigation into the case revealed that radioactive materials were removed from Cummings’ home after his shooting death on Dec. 9.

The report posted on the WikiLeaks Web site states that “On 9 December 2008, radiological dispersal device components and literature, and radioactive materials, were discovered at the Maine residence of an identified deceased James Cummings.”

(...)

Also found was literature on how to build “dirty bombs” and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60, radioactive materials. The FBI report also stated there was evidence linking James Cummings to white supremacist groups. This would seem to confirm observations by local tradesmen who worked at the Cummings home that he was an ardent admirer of Adolf Hitler and had a collection of Nazi memorabilia around the house, including a prominently displayed flag with swastika. Cummings claimed to have pieces of Hitler’s personal silverware and place settings, painter Mike Robbins said a few days after the shooting.

White supremacist SOB with a trust fund, apparently shot by his wife before he could irradiate people. Reportedly, he was angry about Barack Obama's victory in the Presidential election. Well, I'm glad he lived long enough to see it, but not long enough to do anything about it.

9. Fear of growing their numbers?
I suppose there could be other reasons -- it's not part of the storyline. I'm not sure that it's a good thing if they write about it though. There are many nutcases out there who AREN'T organized -- and it's better if they stay that way.

14. Perhaps - but there are ways to make sure it doesn't spread information
Omitting specific names of groups/people/sites is a good way to keep people from mimicing this behavior. I

Beyond that, anything is available via the internet and if people have the will to find it, they will. I'm not sure that keeping this information out of the main stream really does much good since these movements are growing at an alarming rate without it.

10. That's a good question - where's the hard hitting exposes on these people?
Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 08:54 AM by TornadoTN
I don't see Couric, Williams, et. al. scurrying to be first in line to cover these stories and spend days browbeating anything and everything about these people. Personally, I'd like to see them go into the minds of these people and expose their train of thought to the world.

But no, we'll get nothing more than a passive mention and away we'll go to the next scandal involving Michael Phelps or Rhianna.

17. How come the bubble heads in the media...
...don't finally come clean about "dirty bombs" and that their ability to scare a population is much more dangerous than the radioactive contamination they purportedly cause?

I won't hold my breath.

who housed McVeigh and Nichols before the OKC bombing

Likewise we need to NOT lump them all together with this type either, because clearly they are all not exactly the same

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/07/eveningnews/main592012.shtml

William Krar, 62, with ties to white supremacist groups, pleaded guilty to possessing a chemical weapon and faces life in prison, while 54-year-old Judith Bruey could get five years. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess illegal weapons.

Photographs obtained by Dallas CBS station KTVT show illegal machine guns, boxes filled with 500,000 rounds of ammunition, homemade bombs, bomb-making instructions, antidotes for nerve agents and a Ku Klux Klan calling card.

:sarcasm:

Let's not forget the direct link between the "Nativist" movement (anti-"illegals") as it is now re-branded and the White Supremists
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/underpants/143

as Charlie Rangel once famously said about W. "Well," Rangel said. "I really think that he shatters the myth of white supremacy once and for all; it shows that, in this great country, anybody can become president."

20. We were right there!
My wife and I were out to get our Christmas tree, and we got stopped by the cops on Waldo Ave. and told we had to turn around. We saw on the news that evening about the shooting.

There has been a total blackout on any details about the incident, now we know why.

21. The problems of stealing (and privately storing) radioactive materials:
I made several experiments with radioactive materials in a laboratory. (Just some spectroscopy.)

1. These samples have a weight of several grams and are melted into glass. Why? If you touch them, the material (just a few milligrams) leaks into your body and radiates you from inside. Ta-da: cancer.

2. These samples are stored in a lead-plated closet. It is recommended not to let them lie around on your desk between experiments, due to the radiation. Some samples are so radioactive, that they are put inside a small lead-cup (which is again melted inside a hermetic glass-frame): Radiation comes out only in one direction. It is strongly recommended not to look into these tubes, or you risk radiation/eye-cancer.

3. There is a research center a few miles from my university and I heard a story, that one guy stole radioactive materials from there. He stored them in a simple metal-sheet-box in his apartment. What happened? He got heavy radiation-burns. The materials were retrieved and his apartment was sealed of air-proof with metal-plates, to protect his neighborhood against the radiation.

25. Sure do - William Luther Pierce, grandson of the guy who built this place:
"Major W.L. Pierce built the inn in 1889 as a wedding gift for Julia Baird. Seven Pierce offspring were born at The Oaks. Julia, who devoted her entire life to the keeping of her wedding gift enjoyed the house until her death at the age of 99.

Featured in more than two dozen magazine articles and the TV series "Inn Country USA", The Oaks was selected for the cover of three books, including the travel guide to inns, published by the National Trust for Historic Preservation."

http://www.theoaksvictorianinn.com/our_inn.html

"William Luther Pierce III (September 11, 1933 – July 23, 2002) was the leader of the white separatist National Alliance organization, and a principal ideologue of the white nationalist movement. First educated as a physicist, he later worked with George Lincoln Rockwell, the founder of the American Nazi Party. He achieved notoriety as the author of a novel, The Turner Diaries"
