A New Name in HHS Mix
Source: The Washington Post

As deliberations over the next head of the department of Health and Human Services continue, a new name has emerged as a potential pick: Lloyd Dean.

Dean, who is African American, is the head of Catholic Healthcare West, a non-profit health provider based in northern California, and is being pushed for the job by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. (Dean was named by Newsom to a committee that passed universal health care for San Francisco.)

Add Dean's name to a list that still appears to be headed by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius but also includes Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen and Obama presidential transition chief John Podesta.

Would Bredesen Want HHS Job If It's Offered?

an excerpt:

The Washington Times points out this morning, in fact, that while Bredesen and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius are at the top of the list for HHS, the president "reportedly also is looking at Capitol Hill for candidates for health care czar. Names mentioned most frequently are Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana, who, as Senate Finance Committee chairman is a key player in drafting health care legislation, and Democratic Sens. Barbara A. Mikulski of Maryland and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, Connecticut Democrat and a member of the House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees HHS spending, also has been mentioned."

HHS Sweepstakes: It's Sebelius' Turn in the Barrel

an excerpt:

The Christian Defense Coalition, which advertises itself as the defender of life, liberty and the pursuit of Godliness, says Sebelius is unfit to serve as HHS secretary because she's pro-choice.

According to the coalition, "Her views on abortion are so extreme that Kansas City Catholic Archbishop, Joseph Naumann, called on her not to receive communion at her church." As HHS secretary, she'd open the door for taxpayer-funded abortions and turn Barack Obama into "The Abortion President," the group says.

3. Ultimately it is Obama's choice.
Howard Dean may be a great choice, but I don't think that twisting Obama's arm over the choice will him the job. Obama is not deaf and he has heard people's cries for Howard Dean and he will make his own choice.

Lloyd Dean has worked for healthcare for the poor as far back as I can remember....It was one of the platforms that he ran under in a Very Close race for the Student Council President of Western Michigan University in 1971....I know Lloyd H Dean....He was my "Weekday/Overnite Counselor when I was Living at The Lakeside Childrens Home in Kalamazoo Mi when I was a 12 Yo.(1971) and some of us kids did a "Get out the vote" in the Dorms of WMU for him. He is the first person to show me that "We can Change Things"!!!

9. And about reproductive health care.
A guy that runs a CATHOLIC health care organization may not be pro-choice, for example.

10. True
although Sebelius is Catholic also but is pro choice. He might be different since he actually runs a hospital.
