Gregg won't run again for NH senate in 2010
Source: AP

CONCORD, N.H.—Just about the only thing Sen. Judd Gregg's bombshell didn't disrupt was the lineup of those hoping to win his seat in 2010.

After withdrawing his nomination as Commerce secretary Thursday, Gregg said he doesn't plan to run for re-election in 2010. He didn't give specifics, telling reporters, "Sometimes, there's other things to do in life."

Gregg, a Republican serving his third term, had agreed to join President Obama's Cabinet only if his departure wouldn't disrupt the balance of power in the Senate. Gov. John Lynch, a Democrat, agreed to appoint Republican J. Bonnie Newman, who in turn agreed not to run for a full term in 2010. Democrats didn't get the seat they wanted but were looking forward to competing for an open seat in 2010 rather than face Gregg.

That's where things remain despite Thursday's shake-up.

U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes, a Democrat beginning his second term in Washington, was quick to announce his candidacy after Gregg was nominated and said Thursday he intends to remain a candidate. He also took a swipe at Gregg, saying Gregg was passing up a chance to bring about the change that the American people clearly want.

10. yep. Thinkin he found out the perils of letting bush/cheney surveillance on Americans stand
That much surveillance is NOT about terrorists, but about retaining power, by any means. And the power does not care who they have to bully, destroy.

14. To bring him back in line, of course. I mean,
he was about to take a job with the great Satan, right? That's unacceptable to the Repugnicants, so they held some little ugly secret up for him to see, and he folded. Not only that, he's not going to run in 2010. Pretty good stuff they had on him, apparently.

Lots of people in Congress have ugly stuff staining their underwear. Knowing about it is very important in DC politics. So, everyone's sniffing everyone else's drawers, trying to identify the smells.

Thus has it always been. A little intern boffing, a little help with the Lexus, a little wife-avoiding, a little general ugliness. It's all grist for the congressional mill, and that mill grinds exceeding fine.

8. Possibly a stretch in the iron bar hotel
I saw something on DU last night about a Gregg aide being implicated in the Abramoff mess.

13. He really needs to pay attention to details on any future offers
He needs to understand exactly what is expected of him when he says yes to an offer, so that he doesn't have to back out later when he doens't like the fine print.

16. That Abramoff stuff's gonna come out sooner or later
That's why he's not running again. The Feds got his aide -- it's only a matter of time before they get him.
