Has Bush*s Running Mate Gone Lame?
Halliburton and health troubles leave Cheney vulnerable as election approaches

His staff dwarfs those of his predecessors. Al Gore had one foreign policy adviser; Mr Cheney has more than a dozen. In the White House he has an influential - some believe decisive - say on the strategic issues of the day, from long-term energy policy to invading Iraq.

(snip)

A Time/CNN poll this month found that only 43% of Americans thought Mr Cheney should be on the Republican election ticket. A recent Fox survey found his popularity trailing 10 percentage points behind that of Mr Bush. According to a former official who follows political strategy in the White House, the president's election guru, Karl Rove, has conducted similar polls of his own, with worse results.

(snip)

Thomas Schaller, a University of Maryland political scientist, pointed out that dropping Mr Cheney would not make dynastic sense for the Bush family, which is widely believed to be grooming the president's younger brother Jeb, who is governor of Florida , to stand in 2008.

"Replacing Cheney with someone like Frist or Giuliani would create an heir apparent. Replacing Cheney is no way to run a proper monarchy," Mr Schaller said.

10. Uh, not to be picky, but replacing the Veep seems to precede
Truly bad things happening to the President.

Just for superstition's sake, no president should do it.

Yeeks, what a list.

Now I'm worrying about Jeb Bartlett.

17. It is debatable that Roosevelt 'chose' Truman
Roosevelt may have had some say in the naming of Truman as his successor, but I have read it was a committee of the party that 'chose' him. Roosevelt and those higher ups in the party knew the vp would be succeeding him before the term was completed.

3. Rove is conducting his own polls?
May I ask if he is doing this from the White House? Didn't they investigate Al Gore because he might have made a few fund raising phone calls from the WH? Now Karl Rove is ruining the whole Bu$h campaign from the WH and no one seems to mind or even notice?

If Halliburton Dick wants to stay, he'll stay.

6. Let's hope the compost hits the fan around early sept
We want to put the meat to their convention. If it happens right after the convention, even better.

Let's see bush replace a running mate during the election season.

7. I hope he stays. He's a walking billboard of opportunity to
hurt bush. The man reeks of criminality and senility. He's still
pushing WMD's. God help us if someone who doesn't look like Lucifer
takes his place.

They deserve what they get. If, and I mean IF the chimp gets 4 more years, Jeb won't stand a chance. The BFEE will have their image exposed. I don't think the people can find Cheney corrupt without finding the chimp corrupt too. If Cheney leaves with a bad image, that will rub off on bozo.

11. I don't think you guys know who's in charge
Cheney is the ultimate insider and corporatist wire-puller. And, he has more influence than any vice president in my lifetime.

So, he'll just lie low during the campaign, and all we'll hear of him is the quiet whir of his cold, mechanical heart.

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."

12. That's right. If things don't go his way, Cheney might let BUSH go
But it won't be the other way around. Rove can forget about it.

14. Then again
if bush wins (which I don't think is going to happen) then I am confident he will be impeached. But that makes Cheney president...And after Cheney, isn't Tom DeLay next in line.Yikes!

15. Nah, it's Hastert...

And, God help us, Hastert looks like the epitome of moderation next to the current neo-con whackos in the misAdministration.

But it wouldn't work that way anyway. Cheney would have to appoint a VP if he became POTUS, God Forbid.

16. Yeah, it's a scary prospect.
Actually I'm floundering for a glimmer of hope strategy to deal with a possible Bush election.

Only thing I can come up with, is... we need to get Cheney out of the VP post first. Replace him with someone who's less sleazy than the present White House crew. (Admittedly, the only Repub I'd be relieved to see in this role would be McCain.) Then--unless Tecumseh's curse kicks in pretty fast--proceed to impeach Bush.

This strategy would work best if Cheney had to drop out after the election, to avoid the possibility of a VP candidate who'd be more appealing.

20. McCain is quietly waiting in the wings
Bush* desperately needs someone with military credentials. Who better than McCain? Neither Frist or Giuliani would help the cause.
