3rd Liberty City Six trial finally set to begin

The retrial of six inner-city Miami men accused of supporting terrorism will get under way with opening statements Wednesday following three weeks of jury selection.

Attorneys for the Liberty City defendants -- most of whom are black -- picked a racially mixed jury of 12 plus six alternates on Tuesday. The case is being tried for the third time after two juries could not reach verdicts.

The main jury includes four Hispanics, four blacks, three non-Hispanic whites and one juror of Iranian descent.

The defendants, part of a struggling group of construction laborers who tried to start a Liberty City religious organization, were arrested in June 2006. They are charged with conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda, to destroy buildings such as the FBI regional office in Miami and to break away from the United States.

1. Earlier story post by AlCzervik : Jurors deadlock in 6 of 7 defendants in Sears Tower plot
Jurors deadlock in 6 of 7 defendants in Sears Tower plot
Associated Press - December 13, 2007 4:04 PM ET

MIAMI (AP) - A jury in Miami has acquitted 1 of 7 defendants charged with plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and wage war against the U.S. A mistrial has been declared for the remaining six after the federal jury deadlocked.

Federal prosecutors say the government plans to retry the six next year. The federal judge set a January seventh date to start picking a new jury.

The jury gave up on the others after nine days of deliberations, following a nearly two-month trial. The jury twice sent notes to the judge saying they couldn't reach verdicts but were told to keep trying. The mistrial came after their third note.

Prosecutors say the "Liberty City Seven" swore allegiance to al-Qaida and hoped to forge an alliance to carry out bombings against America's tallest skyscraper, the FBI's Miami office and other federal buildings.

The group never actually made contact with al-Qaida. Instead, a paid FBI informant posed as an al-Qaida emissary.

2. Know what ticks me off about this article?
The first paragraphs are dedicsted to discussing the *race* of the defendants and of the jurors, not about the facts or allegations of the case.

3. Odd, isn't it? They were chosen, no doubt, because they were, in many cases,
foreign born, not powerful, not sophisticated in American legal process, less likely than many people born here to know how to deal with a set-up trap by Bush's administration in order to pursue, and deepen his depiction of a world-wide terrorism, with roots active right here in the States.

As the men told anyone who would listen, they went along with the FBI plant, agreeing with him when he suggested, HIMSELF, various schemes, plots, etc., as he also dangled before them, simultaneously the idea he would supply them with new clothing, cars, money, cameras, etc. As they said from the first, the plans were HIS, and they were friendly with him as it appeared he was someone who could give them these things.

Even the Miami Herald readers who post their comments about the articles in the paper were "on" to the government's prosecution of these people from the first moment.

They were set up to reinforce the lie there was a terrorist element working in Miami which would attract more federal money to the area, more attention, and would help develop and and foundation Bush's phony war on the Mideast.
