Protest looms as US is set to deport 30,000 Haitians
Source: AFP

MIAMI (AFP) — Activists called a protest for Saturday as the United States moved closer to carrying out deportation orders for more than 30,000 Haitians.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said Tuesday that deportation orders have been processed for 30,299 Haitians and hundreds have been put in detention centers or on electronic monitoring at home in preparation for deportation.

"Last week we had nationally 30,299 Haitians on final order of removal, meaning that an Immigration judge ordered them to be deported from the United States," said spokeswoman Nicole Navas.

Meanwhile 598 Haitians are detained and 243 (have) electronic monitoring, Navas explained.

US authorities complain that deportations have been dragged out because the Haitian government has failed to provide proper documentation for the trips while insisting it is not in any shape to handle a major return of refugees.

3. picture here

Yolen Jeunky sold mud cookies in Cite Soleil last fall. Even the prices for the edible clay, collected in Haiti's central plain, have risen as oil costs have driven up agricultural basics. (

2. If they could have convinced authorities they were from Cuba, they'd be safe, wouldn't they?
They'd also be offered instant legal status, instant green card, social security, food stamps, US taxpayer-financed Section 8 housing, medical treatment, fiancial assistance for education, and other considerations through the Cuban Adjustment Act.

These Haitians battled seas in some cases, for over 700 miles to get here.

What a bitter, bitter shame.

4. Let's face the facts. There is no other refugee group treated so unfairly as Haitians in this
country.

What they did to Aristede was unforgiveable.
Taking over the country and putting 100% terrorists in charge.
Moving in the World Bank, IMF, US and French bosses to direct the new government of Haiti after Aristede.
Collecting Haitian refugees at sea and imprisoning them in Guanatanamo for months was it years.

You can see what happens to people when they have no collective voice.

As to Cubans -

if a person took a copy of the legislation that applies to the entry of Cubans and the legislation that applies to everyone else, they would be astounded.

Cubans get every privilege imaginable - probably no immigrant group in the history of this country has received treatment as generous as the laws specifying Cubans. Written, approved, and improved by Democrats as well as Republican Congresspeople - for DECADE AFTER DECADE - all because of the votes they hoped to and did receive. Plain kick backs.

(Taxpayer money assigned to NED - NED gives to CANF and other Cuban American associations - CANF and others put a portion of it into the POCKETS of Democratic and Republican Congresspeople.)

All that discriminatory legislation should be rewritten to provide for a level playing field. The threat of communism that was poured down on our heads about Cuba is long dead. The legislation should have been leveled when the Berlin Wall came down. It is pure discrimination.

If this exportation goes through - some of these Haitians will be killed immediately.

And what is the total of parent-less children as a result of this imprisonment?

Haitians don't get a fair deal from the U.S. of America - plain and simple.

How the U.S. got away with the Aristide trap is something that the entire world should not forget. We are not a superior nation. Bigotry and corruption have been winning for a long time.

7. Don't forget the legacy of the Diaz Balart/Cuban News Machine...
of which Rick Sanchez is the latest shining member... I remember watching him drive local news broadcasts that applauded the work of Hermanos al Rescate in one piece and then talking about the "smuggling" of Haitian refugees in another piece. The Double Standard in Miami is the worst I've ever seen in journalism.

Hermanos al Rescate(Brothers to the Rescue) is a group of Cuban private plane pilots and boat owners who search for Balseros in the open water... hastening their rescue before the Coast Guard gets them and taking advantage of the wet feet/dry feet policy.

Our gov's policies have screwed over the Haitians in more than one way.

10. Legislation favoring Cubans was already documented - and more was added, then I believe more was
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 10:30 PM by peacetalksforall
added under Clinton. At one time, no Cuban-American would vote for a Democrat because of their hate for JFK. But Dems tried to get their vote anyway - try meaning buy.

Just like lobbyist's supposedly wrote the energy plan for Cheney, Cuban associations have supposedly written the legislation for Cuban refugees. And it all passed.

I once read a list posted to DU listing payments to Congress. In the Senate - Joe Leiberman was at the top of the list.

Would I be writing about this if Haitians were treated equally? Yes, because of the arrogance and hatred for Democrats and because the country didn't know and didn't care about the favoritsm.

I heard stories long ago about the money given Cuban refugees when they first started coming over - I don't remember the numbers - it was unbelievably generous. Money to start businesses as well. It must be added that they used the money well, I believe; Cubans were and are very industrious and creative.

We shouldn't forget that our taxpayer money also went for supplies and fees to allow some to try to kill Castro and disturb tourism to Cuba EVEN THOUGH the people who would benefit from tourism were relatives who hadn't left Cuba.

Everything about money related to Cuba has been screwed up - embargoes that we instigated and got nearly the entire world to honor - then they started breaking away. Europeans and Canadians have been going to Cuba for decades. Under George Bush the II, a hefty fine for Americans that had been ignored was strictly enforced - because Cuban-Americans didn't want Castro to benefit. Cuban-Americans sent billions to their relatives via money orders, then got it stopped one day because (it was said) they didn't want Castro to benefit.

Meanwhile, Haitians struggle and are now imprisoned. I didn't know that was happening.

Do Republicans relish separating children from their parents?

Does anyone know how many Mexican and Central Americans have been yanked out of their homes to be sent to prisons waiting deportation?

Cubans no.

Yes, make sure no one gets an abortion, then yank the birthed ones away from parents out of raw hate and meanness - or - create a war for the children to fight.

Haitians, Mexicans, Central Americans don't deserve to be treated this way.

Bigotry reigns.

11. Sad but terrific post . . .
Hoping that Obama will lift the embargo on Cuba -- travel, etc.

It's insane.

And, I also heard that liberal/moderate Cubans in Florida were rising up.

Some of the right-wing Cuban leaders are vicious! A few of them in Congress.

Haitians, IMO, are feared because they have been revolutionaries -- full of courage.

Aristide, I thought was wonderful, and he was especially tough on RCC --

"Rich church, poor people" --

Sad, sad ---

I did send an "contact" to Obama on the form about this ---

I hope everyone will and that they will ponder how much attention this may get ---

No help from the press, I'm sure!!!

14. In Miami's pro Aristide Haitian underground, they have a saying..
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 02:46 AM by Mika
"Castro? We wish for 1000 Castros!"

Such a sentiment in Miami gives good reason as to why they are the underground.

This is another reason they are turned away. The Miami branch of ICE is run by pro exile factions. Processing and asylum hearings happen here. The Haitian immigrant majority are lefties. Aristide supporters. Castro lovers. Commies. Hated by the exile mobsters running Miami.

Lots of shit going on in this town. Like and onion. You could peel away layers forever. Haitians & exiles.. Like Caribbean crips and bloods. The Lat Am/ Caribbean proxy wars on these very streets. Drive around in your car and flip thru the exile and then to the Haitian radio stations. Polar opposites. One group snarling like beaten dogs seeking the extermination of anything or anyone with a favorable opinion of their foe, and the other desperate for peace, reconciliation, and help, plus the return of their leader.

Hell of a town.

On edit: I have never, ever, seen a Haitian at The Versailles.

15. Where have you been on DU - I haven't read your posts for a long time.
You reminded me that all the government jobs are loaded down with Cuban-Americans. I'm not surprised that there are Haitians in prison.

I think it's time to upgrade all immigrants to the Cuban-American level or downgrade Cuban-Americans to the Haitian, Mexican/Central American. Panamanian, Armenia, Vietnam level.

16. Hi there. I took a little time off. My SO was killed in a bike crash in October.
I've been trying to get it together. Not very easy. House is empty. Quiet. Crushingly so.

If it hadn't have been for fellow DUer Billy Burnett, I might not have made it.

Thanks for asking.

You can't get a government job in Miami if you don't hate Castro/Chavez openly and with doupleplus vitriol.
