KABUL, Afghanistan – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with President Hamid Karzai in Kabul on Saturday where the two likely talked about the incoming surge of U.S. forces.

Pelosi, D-Calif., arrived in Afghanistan on Friday to meet with Afghan officials and U.S. and NATO military leaders, said Capt. Elizabeth Mathias, a U.S. military spokeswoman. Pelosi also met with U.S. troops during her two-day visit.

President Barack Obama announced this last week a surge of 17,000 additional forces to bolster the record 38,000 U.S. troops already in the country. Commanders say the troops are needed to fight a resurgent Taliban that has increased attacks the last three years. Militants now control wide swaths of rural countryside.

Pelosi's visit comes about a week after a trip here by Richard Holbrooke, Obama's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

1. Good. The Democrats are serious. We will see what comes
of this.

Hot stuff! Even if Karzai is history, we are making an effort, finally.

2. This is true. The diversion of our military to Iraq was a HUGE screw up
and it was well-known at the time. Now we have to either get serious or get the hell out.

3. Are you noticing a pattern here?
VP Biden goes to Europe, Secretary of State Clinton goes to Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China, Speaker Pelosi goes to Afghanistan, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Kerry goes to Syria and President Obama goes to Canada - all within the 1st month of his inauguration.

It'd be interesting to compare this 'reaching out' with the 1st month of Bush's 1st term. Somehow, I think I know already...
