Clinton in China pushes environment, finance

BEIJING – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chinese officials agreed Saturday to focus their governments' efforts on stabilizing the battered global economy and combating climate change, putting aside long-standing concerns about human rights.

After a morning of talks during her inaugural visit to China as America's top diplomat, Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said a regular U.S.-China dialogue on economic issues would be expanded to include troubling security issues.

"It is essential that the United States and China have a positive, cooperative relationship," Clinton told reporters at a joint news conference with Yang. She said that they also agreed on the need to develop clean energy technology that would use renewable sources and safely store the dirty emissions from burning coal. With the export-heavy Chinese economy reeling from the U.S. downturn, Clinton sought to reassure China that its massive holdings of U.S. Treasury notes and other government debt would remain a good investment.

"I appreciate greatly the Chinese government's continuing confidence in United States treasuries. I think this is well-grounded confidence," she said. "We have every reason to believe that the United States and China will recover, and together we will help lead the world recovery."

Edited on Sat Feb-21-09 07:53 AM by MannyGoldstein
The cash is drying up for the "speech circuit" at banks Bill deregulated :-(

But the Chinese still owe for all the US jobs they were handed.

3. Clinton urges U.S.-China co-operation on clean technology
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed senior Chinese officials Saturday to co-operate on a number of issues, including the environment, the world financial crisis and security threats.

After a meeting with Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Clinton spoke of a new partnership between the U.S. and China to reduce carbon emissions, a tall order since the United States is the biggest energy consumer in the world.

China could be the biggest by next year, according to the International Energy Agency.

"The United States and China will build an important partnership to develop and deploy clean energy technologies designed to speed our transformation to low-carbon economies," Clinton said in Beijing.

And what happens when one digs into the story?

She didn't say that at all.

The headline parrots the Canadian government's approach to GHG.

Unfortunately for all, it may be the approach that everyone thinks will achieve something. And take the issue off the table.

4. US, China to ‘to help lead the world recovery’
This is from the link someone gave in the comments section of the CBC story...

The US and China pledged to step up a high-level dialogue between the two countries which will address the global financial crisis, climate change and security issues.

Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, said the two governments would work together “to help lead the world recovery” and that she appreciated China’s continued purchases of US Treasury bonds.

Speaking on her first visit to Beijing since taking over at the State department, Mrs Clinton said that human rights issues would take a back seat to the discussions about the economy, North Korea and global warming.

“World events have given us a full and formidable agenda,” she said. ”As we tackle it, the United States is committed to pursuing a positive, cooperative relationship with China, one that we believe is important to future peace, progress and prosperity for both countries and for the world.”

The visit has underlined the heavy interdependence of the two countries on many important issues. While the US is the biggest national market for China’s exports, China is the largest holder of US government debt. The two countries are now the largest carbon emitters on the planet.

”I appreciate greatly the Chinese government’s continuing confidence in United States treasuries. I think that’s a well-grounded confidence,” Mrs Clinton said on Saturday.

5. That's Correct
But when one looks at my CBC headline, it is Clean Technology.

It is what? No more electrons? No more...

What they are pushing for, in the CBC headline, is carbon capture.

Why doesn't someone do a simple thermodynamic expose and say what it would cost?

Has anyone here heard about the amount of CO2 produced when ethanol is produced? Just in the CO2 produced by the bugs!

What the headlines say is not necessarily what is.

And I also agree with Al Gore, "clean coal" is an oxymoron.

7. Agree With
You.

Also, I would commend Obama on the move he has made.

He is telling each and every country, that it is up to them to manage their own affairs.

It is a very strong statement in my opinion.

I expect he will have untold support to rejuvenate the UN.
