GOP Eager for Fight As Election Nears

President Bush's anxious allies say election-year criticism has undercut his standing with the American public - and they want to start fighting back.

"The mood is not restless, but restive. Everybody's eager to get in the game," said Tom Rath, a Republican Party leader in New Hampshire who advises the White House. "Republicans are anxious to get going."

In nearly two dozen interviews, GOP leaders across the country said they were equal parts confident and concerned about Bush's political prospects, united in their belief that the president has time to recover from the pounding by Democratic candidates.

John Truscott, a GOP strategist in Michigan, said Bush is "wise to let his competition have their day."

"You've got to smoke them out a bit to see what arguments they're making so you can fight back when it's time to effectively do so," he said.

The grievances against Bush* aren't going away. These are big items, and he continues to refuse to address them. TANG, WMDs, Enron, you name it.

That being said, * will have $200M to fight back with. As great as I feel about the numbers right now of Kerry OR Edwards vs. Bush*, it will be a different ballgame entirely this summer. Repukes will milk 9/11 like they've never milked anything before. And if OBL is caught in the 2004 version of the October Surprise, all bets are off. there will be only one debate (if that,) no live press conferences and certainly no more Meet The Press Interviews, all of Smirk's appearances will be carefully scripted. The real "fight" will be the dirty push polls, the carefully placed "anonymous" leaflets, the "leaked" rumors. It will be the South Carolina GOP Primary on a nation wide scale.
