Google's Gmail service crashes across world
Edited on Tue Feb-24-09 07:21 AM by jordi_fanclub
Source: UK's The Telegraph

Google’s web-based email service, Gmail, has crashed this morning, leaving millions of users from Britain to Australia unable to send and receive messages.

The email service went offline at around 10.25am GMT, and the outage appears to have affected users throughout the UK as well as across Europe, and even as far afield as Australia and India.

It appears that only web-based Gmail access is affected, and users can continue to send and receive messages using other devices, such as mobile phones and third-party mail clients.

Google could not confirm what had caused the outage. “A number of users are having difficulty accessing Gmail,” said the company in a statement. “We are working to resolve the problem. We know how important Gmail is to users, so we take issues like this very seriously, and we apologise for the inconvenience.

“We are posting status updates about the problem at mail.google.com/support.”

5. Why do poeple like Gmail so much anyway?
What's wrong with an ordinary pop mail account via your ISP?

6. You might change your ISP...which means changing your email
which is quite annoying....and GMail is usually quite good and has huge storage.

7. Because it's an ISP-independent mail provider...
The short explanation is:
ISP dependent accounts means... you cannot change easily from an ISP to another.
(at some point, as example when moving from a city to another, you must pay for the new and the old ISP)

11. There are also services that specialize in providing E-mail for a small fee
I was thinking a free service like G-mail would be good till i noticed how much junk the pay service filtered out. The other worry would be something like a crash in the service, the free service might feel a lot less pressure for repair since they sing to the tune of advertisers

13. Yep but Google also have a paid service...
What is down at this moment is all: the free AND the paid.

8. My POP account doesn't let me
have 7GB's of storage free. I also have a little program I use that treats Gmail like a harddrive and lets me store files on there off my laptop..

And there are tons of other email services including ISP-independant POP email services! Some are free too!
