Rupert Murdoch released a statement in the pages of the NY Post on Tuesday, saying in part, "I am ultimately responsible."

Murdoch was responding to the uproar after last week's controversial stimulus cartoon, for which the paper had already semi-apologized.

The statement in full:

As the Chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me.

Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted.
Over the past couple of days, I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused. At the same time, I have had conversations with Post editors about the situation and I can assure you - without a doubt - that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such.

We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our communit

5. Because he is a jerk. It wa wrong, and
he knows that it was meant to be racist. But he says here that it was not meant to be racist. Sure, if it was not meant to be racist, then the world is flat.

7. LOL! Rupert Murdoch lying again...I'm shocked!
Murdoch is like the attorney that blurts out some bit of evidence during trial that they know will bias the jury and then apologize to the judge for their outburst. You cannot unring this bell Mr. Murdoch. I hope everyone realizes that unless and until someone gets canned, this is all just window dressing.

8. Ahhhh, the art of the non-apology apology
...'apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted.'...

I was more shocked at the assassination hint - the racism is there for any one to see but to suggest shooting the 'writer' of the stimulus plan - totally unacceptable.

13. Well, his statement is, at least, a little better than the vitriolic crap...
from the NYP itself. Someone else posted he needs to fire the editor and the cartoonist, I agree. If they are that "insensitive" then they are incapable of doing their jobs and should be out the door.

Bottom line: We don't need no damn simian references to African Americans ever again.

Murdoch sorry for NY Post cartoon seen as racist

NEW YORK – New York Post Chairman Rupert Murdoch apologized Tuesday for a cartoon that critics said likened a violent chimpanzee shot dead by police to President Barack Obama.

In a statement published in the newspaper, Murdoch said he wanted to "personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted." He said the Post will work to be more sensitive.

Murdoch said the cartoon was intended only to "mock a badly written piece of legislation."

The cartoon, which was published Wednesday, depicted the body of the bullet-riddled chimp Travis and two police officers. The caption said: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

The chimp was killed in Connecticut last week after mauling a woman.

The Post also apologized Thursday in an online editorial.

The Rev. Al Sharpton is urging the Federal Communications Commission to review policies allowing Post owner News Corp. to control multiple media outlets in the same market.

20. Sorry it was seen that way
Always the same equivocation from these people. I used to buy the Post now and then for shits and giggles and for the sports, like a lot of NYC liberals. Not anymore. My wife neither, and it takes a lot for her to make a political statement of any kind. Glad it's hurting them.

22. That is another bullshit apology!
"Sorry if you felt offended or even insulted."

What is that crap. Who cares about this apology anyway?? Even if it was perfectly phrased I wouldn't believe it. We all know Murdoch is a scumbag Repig.
