Apparent murder-suicide involves Nellis airman (was being treated for PTSD after Iraq tour)

A Nellis Air Force Base airman involved in what police think is a murder-suicide was being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder after a tour in Iraq.

That's the word from base spokeswoman Capt. Amanda Ferrell, who says 25-year-old Jason Klinkenberg was receiving treatment in response to unspecified events that took place during a five-month tour in Iraq that ended in 2006.

Ferrell says what role PTSD played in his death is still unknown, but there weren't any records of medals or awards in his file that would indicate he was injured during his tour. Klinkenberg's death came Friday after a roughly two-hour standoff with police inside an apartment at the Craig Ranch Villas.

Police say his 23-year-old wife, Crystal, contacted a friend, who called police claiming that the airman was holding a gun to her head.

SWAT officers later entered the apartment to find the couple dead from gunshot wounds. The Clark County coroner's office is investigating whether it was a murder-suicide.
