Bunning: ‘I would have a suit’ if Republicans recruit an opponent
Source: Bluegrass Politics

Sen. Jim Bunning is vowing to fight back as his feud with Republican leadership over his 2010 re-election bid spills into the national political scene.

If Republican campaign organizations tried to recruit another candidate to run in Bunning’s stead, “I would have a suit against the (National Republican Senatorial Committee) if they did that,” Bunning told reporters on Tuesday. “In their bylaws, support of the incumbents is the only reason they exist.”

The 77-year-old senator says he’s repeatedly told Republican leadership that he plans on running in 2010 for a third term.

This week, speculation about Bunning’s seat has focused on state Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, who on Monday wouldn’t rule out running for U.S. Senate. But Williams told reporters that he would be “less than candid” if he did not say “a lot of rank-and-file people” have called him about the race.

Setting aside the kookiness of trying to sue a Party over lack of support (does he feel the RNC was obligated to support David Duke's gubernatorial campaign?), its interesting to see how far the Republicans have to go in pulling themselved together for 2010.

1. I like this. Along with Bob Smith wanting to challenge Sununu for the Republican nomination in NH
in a grudge-fest.

Republicans v. Republicans. Good stuff. :D

7. Bunning damn near lost in 04
I seem to remember there were accusations that he had Alzheimer's. There was a lot of evidence and bizarre behavior to back it up.

Damn good pitcher, messed up politician. Shoulda stuck to baseball.

8. Trey Grayson would be far more of challenge than David Williams.
I really hope that Bunning runs. Dems are a shoe-in if he does.

10. Yes, Grayson scares me
He hides his hideousness under his polished, handsome exterior. David Williams is just a big fat loud-mouthed creep; and he doesn't do much to disguise that.

The Democratic primary should have some very good candidates. I want Bunning to run again in the worst way. I can think of several Democrats that would have a very good chance to beat him.

14. Dan Mongiardo can beat Bunning, but so could Crit Luellen, Jack Conway and others.
They could also beat Williams. But you're right about Grayson. It would not surprise me at all if he and Bunning have cooked up some sort of plan.

9. So what's to stop them for changing the bylaws?
Or at the very least, they could modify them to include a provision which allows them to support someone other than an incumbent if they believe they incumbent no longer represents the best chance of getting a Republican elected.

Hey Bunning ... if they don't want you, they will find a way to NOT support you. It doesn't matter what the freakin' bylaws say! :P
