LONDON — Naomi Klein is the winner of the inaugural Warwick Prize for Writing for her book "The Shock Doctrine."

The prize, worth 50,000 British pounds (about C$90,000), is run by Britain's University of Warwick and will be handed out every other year.

The book by the Toronto-based journalist topped a short list of six international titles. This year's prize theme, complexity, was interpreted differently by each writer, organizers said.

"'The Shock Doctrine' is a brilliant, provocative, outstandingly written investigation into some of the great outrages of our time," said author China Mieville, chair of the judging panel.

5. I know this is an overused cliche, but...
Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" is THE book I am recommeding to friends and acquaintances and sending to my children and bestest friends. The best summary of the evil policies we've indulged in.

6. The same here. It has changed my approach
to thinking and teaching greatly. Plus, it confirms some of my suspicions about recent history.

11. I do the same thing. Another great book is "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man".
If the light doesn't go on after reading these two books, I'm afraid it probably never will.

7. Brilliant book - makes plain the republicon mindset that is so anti-life and
anti-democracy, anti-truth, anti-honor, and anti-Spirit

9. A hard to read book
I normally can read two to three books a week. This one has taken me two weeks and I am only half way into it. It is so stomach wrenching, that I have to go slowly. What a mess we have made of the world. How greedy, insensitive and destructive we are. The Chicago boys should all be hung, including the ones we still have running things in this country. Also, fits the current crises and helps one to understand the deliberate faux chaos the Repubs use to keep everyone in march step

:grr:

Happy Mardi Gras to us all !

18. It took me more than a month.
The amount of detail is absolutely astonishing. It may be the most important book in a generation.

20. I'm glad I'm not the only one taking my time with this book!
Such a slim volume! Such glowing reviews!

I CAN NOT be interrupted while I'm trying
to read something this complex, so I can
only read it for an hour at a time while
I wait for my daughter's weekly appointment
to be over.

I have been reading it for a month now, and
I'm sure my daughter's doctor thinks I'm a
MORAN, because I'm still reading the same book!

I pick it up and think, OH CRAP, Boris Yeltsin!
I'm back in Russia, or Argentina, or Chile.
Amazing just how LITTLE I know about important
things, and how the media played us.

I WILL FINISH THIS BOOK, although I've read
about 3 others in between.
