(Update) Five Turkish Airlines crew among the crash dead at Schiphol airport

Five crew members, including three pilots, were among the nine people killed when a Turkish Airways flight crashed on its descent into Amsterdam's Schiphol airport.

The names of the dead are expected to be officially released today but reports emerged that the three pilots were Captain Hasan Tahsin Arisan, Murat Sezer and Olgay Ozgur.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which was carrying 127 passengers and seven crew from Istanbul, crashed into a ploughed field at 10.30am local time yesterday, narrowly missing a highway. It broke into three pieces but, luckily, did not catch fire.

Witnesses said that the aircraft crashed tail-first but investigators refused to speculate why the aircraft descended too soon or to comment on suggestions that the tail smashed into the ground as the aircraft tried to regain height or execute an emergency landing.
