WILMINGTON, Del. -- Conrad Black says he was "horribly defamed" by longtime business colleagues and was duped into stepping down as head of his newspaper empire and offering to repay money.

"I have been horribly defamed and in fact characterized and stigmatized as an embezzler," Black testified Friday in a bitter court battle pitting him against the board of directors of the company he founded and controls.

"I am trying to retrieve my reputation as an honest man."

Black's lawyers introduced accounting documents they say prove he did not take unauthorized payments from Hollinger International, which owns the Daily Telegraph in London, the Chicago Sun-Times and other media properties.

6. Update: Adviser testifies Black threatened committee members

Adviser testifies Black threatened committee members

SETH SUTEL

Associated Press

WILMINGTON, Del. - Conrad Black, the embattled newspaper tycoon, struck back at his board of directors Friday, testifying that he was railroaded into stepping down as CEO of his publishing empire and agreeing to return payments he received from the company.

In the third and last scheduled day of testimony, Black said he wasn't given enough time to respond to charges from a special committee of the board of Hollinger International Inc. that he and other top executives improperly received about $16 million in payments that hadn't been authorized.
(snip)

Black and his lawyers are arguing that enough other evidence has come to light since then suggesting the payments may well have received the proper approval from the board. Black has reversed his promise to repay the $7 million and wants to be reinstated as CEO.

7. As we slip through the looking glass...
I cannot imagine any conceivable way that Conrad Black could be "defamed". It's just not possible.

As to "retrieving his reputation as an honest man"... Dude. You never had one. You're pond scum. You were born pond scum. You will die pond scum. End of issue.

That settles that.

:nopity: :nuke:

8. being ever curious
I wondered what Linda McQuaig might be saying about it all. McQuaig, a lefty, populist economist, was one of the first to feel the icy sting of Black's libel chill practices, when she dared to say something unflattering about him. (Later, she inexplicably accepted employment with the National Post; I mean, I'm sure she explained it, alterative voices, yada yada, it just struck me as odd.)

McQuaig is one of us, of course; from a review of one of her books:

The blurb on the dust jacket of The Cult of Impotence says of author Linda McQuaig, "Conrad Black has suggested on national radio that she should be horsewhipped." You don't need a better reason than that to buy a copy of this book.

Thanks to such controversial books as Shooting the Hippo, The Wealthy Banker's Wife, The Quick and the Dead, and Behind Closed Doors, McQuaig, a Toronto-based journalist and author, has earned the anger of Black and the rest of the Canadian establishment. Although the titles are inscrutable, the books themselves feature solid reporting, thorough analysis, and crisp writing. The Cult of Impotence, goofy title and all, is no exception.

McQuaig's book is a welcome antidote to the endless stream of anti-public sector hype parroted by the Canadian media. Like the little boy at the parade, McQuaig points at Canada's political and business leaders and shouts, "But the emperor has nothing on at all!" She reminds us that, since the Liberals were first elected in 1994, the Chrétien government has cut spending more than even Mulroney's tight-fisted Conservatives. ...
-- i.e., no Liberal.

So I asked Google.

(A repro of a November 2003 Toronto Star article I'd missed, at a site for which I do not vouch.)

I recall being puzzled a few years ago reading an article by Conrad Black, in which he lamented the brain drain of talented Canadians leaving for the United States and Britain. The claim that we were losing our best and brightest to the U.S. was of course familiar. But Britain? I hadn't heard of any big brains going in that direction.

Then I realized, of course, that he was thinking of himself and his wife. The notion that Canada suffered some sort of damaging loss with the departure of Black and his wife, Barbara Amiel, took on new irony last week.

... For years, Black has been the larger-than-life personification of the excesses of a corporate tycoon, from his youthful power grab for control of Argus Corporation to his attempt to strip assets out of the Dominion Store employees' pension fund.

<my co-vivant worked there as a youngster, and has had one of those personal hates on for Black ever since way back then>

A couple of years ago, the nation was gripped by the drama of watching Black choose between his Canadian citizenship and a chance to sit in Britain's unelected chamber as a titled baron - a perk he had relentlessly pursued.

... Black revealed the depth of his emotional anguish over the choice when he noted: "Citizenship of Canada is not now for me competitive with that of the United Kingdom."

One can hear the sound of McQuaig rubbing her hands with glee. Although it's almost drowned out by all the rest of us. ;)

11. In the "For What It's Worth" Department.
No doubt this is just more scurrilous, underhanded, unfounded, vile defamation of the honest and upright character of our lovable Lord Tubby the Rich Guy, and I would advise anyone don't believe a word of it.

A highly well-informed political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, Steve Neal, was found dead today under very odd circumstances.

In their report, 2/19/4, the Chicago Tribune apparently tried to cover up the strange event. They said that no foul play was suspected by the police. Other Chicago mass media reports, however, stated that the police were investigating possible foul play. Among other things, it is very strange how the invisible poison carbon monoxide flooded his house.

The Sun-Times report said in its opening news item, "Steve Neal, Chicago's premiere political columnist for decades, famous for his encyclopedic knowledge of history and political lore, for endlessly swapping stories with political junkies that ranged from a biography of Wendell Wilkie to the correspondence between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman, died Wednesday at his Hinsdale home."

All the mass media reports, nevertheless, conveniently censored reported details. Such as, that Neal was quietly investigating that his boss, Sun-Times owner, Lord Conrad Black, had ostensibly misappropriated, huge funds, including pension funds of his media empire. Some reportedly informed Neal that the amount of defalcation was at least two hundred million dollars. AND, that Black was apparently hiding business losses of his company, Hollinger, that same way done by the late infamous Robert Maxwell who plundered hundreds of millions, sucked out, from among other places, his media workers pension funds.
