Jindal Admits Katrina Story Was False
Source: Politico via Talking Points Memo

Remember that story Bobby Jindal told in his big speech Tuesday night -- about how during Katrina, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a local sheriff who was battling government red tape to try to rescue stranded victims?

Turns out it wasn't actually, you know, true.

In the last few days, first Daily Kos, and then TPMmuckraker, raised serious questions about the story, based in part on the fact that no news reports we could find place Jindal in the affected area at the specific time at issue.

,
But now, a Jindal spokeswoman has admitted to Politico that in reality, Jindal overheard Lee talking about the episode to someone else by phone "days later." The spokeswoman said she thought Lee, who died in 2007, was being interviewed about the incident at the time.

Hmmm.... another Republican lying. Jindal makes a great GOP presidential candidate since he's obviously committed to uphold the time honored GOP tradition of lying even when he doesn't have to lie

This admission was made by a spokesperson not Jindal himself, so it doesn't really count as an admission from Jindal!

And until he comes out and admits he lied the Repukes won't believe it.

This can't be proven so easily, but I bet that even if he goes by Bobby today, when he was a little kid, his dad didn't call him "Bobby".

12. What an odd thing for him to do.
He spent serious time laying out this parable to make his point that government gets in the way of personal initiative. And that story turns out to be a complete fabrication. It follows then that maybe his point is completely wrong...government can be a vehicle for social good.

So, not only does his message get panned for it's Mickey Mouse delivery (seriously, it reminded me of that guy who used to do the Mouseketeer show) but the core message has been totally undercut by Jindel's use of a easily debunked example with the simple checking of the facts. Way to go Bobby! It just reaffirms what we already know - there is no foundation of truth to the Republican political philosophy.

39. Way off topic, but I gotta tell ya'll this:
On 9/11, I was 10 miles from home, running to the library, picking up meds, and getting food at Price Cutters (Employee Owned - I love that place).

It was at the library that I heard of what was happening (when you walk into a library and the radio is jacked to full volume and no one is there but the librarian, !??!)- the first tower had just come down.

I drove home totally freaked, repeating again and again, "It's 'Anything Can Happen' Day. It's 'Anything Can Happen' Day."

Strraannge, but true -

Anyway, this Bobby fellow is an idiot, no matter WHAT day it is, apparently!

19. Conservative ideology has no foundation in reality
Edited on Fri Feb-27-09 02:12 PM by Gman
which is why it is doomed to fail by design. They've created an elaborate show of smoke and mirrors. They carried on the illusions for 8 years. The results have been nothing short of catastrophic for the country. Yet, they continue to deny truth and reality just as they deny evolution. They deny that which does not fit their ideology. They willfully lie, if anything to continue to prop up their own bankrupt ideology that was never based on reality to begin with.

The party is officially over for this current brand of conservative ideology. They must now go about the process of inventing new false realities that will sell to mainstream America. But they now have a huge problem they never had during the Reagan revolution. They have to contend with the Internet and the instantaneous information world we live in where things like if Jindal was actually with this sheriff at the time he says he was can be easily checked, debunked and the entire world knows it was false within a short period of time.

I often wonder how different things would have been had Clinton been President with the same internet tools/infrastructure that exists today. I doubt that the impeachment would ever have been attempted. OTOH, I also imagine that Republicans rue the day that they helped create the federal laws establishing the medium commercially.

31. Welcome, Groundloop!
I keep tellin' y'all to go easy on the Goopers! Amongst all those old white men, they only have a few tokens! They're workin' with what they have!

I mean, Michael Steele is African American they put forward--who else they got? Alan Keyes? Kenneth Blackwell? Obviously Steele "They're throwing Oreos at me!" is the best of the three.

And they have to troll Miami for any RW Latinos. You know, children of the Cuban refugees that Carter brought over--much to the screaming of racist Repigs in the 70s. But you notice how Goopers don't wanna go there, because of their stance on immigration--and they know their base can't differentiate between Latinos from Mexico (who're all a bunch of gol-danged Illegals) and Latinos from Cuba.

As for women--hoo boy if Caribou Barbie is the best they can offer my gender, then you know it's pretty well crash and burn time. You gotta feel a little bit sorry for them....

NOT! It's all about shadenfreude, and I'm lovin' every minute of it!

43. why let the truth get in the way of a good lie?
this is the way the repukes get away with shit.

The spew out the shit covered lie, it's picked up by the ditto heads as truth. the MSM runs with the moronic story as gospel.

Then and only then, it's found out that is actually total and complete bullshit.

they come out and admit it, but by that point, the news cycle has already moved on to something else and the apology is printed on page 19 of the local rag.

in the mean time, the lie gets legs while the truth gets panned.

Weeee!! this is morons* and pig boys legacy.

63. Update at TPM:
Late Update: Politico's Ben Smith has updated his post with the following:

UPDATE: I'd initially misunderstood Sellers to be saying Jindal and Lee didn't meet while rescue efforts were still underway. In fact, she said, the conversation took place in the aftermath of the storm, but after the boat incident.

"Bobby and I walked into harry lee's office - he's yelling on the phone about a decision he's already made," Jindal chief of staff Timmy Teepell recalled. "He's saying this is a decision I made, and if you don't like it you can come and arrest me."

Teepell said the exchange took place in the week following Katrina, when Jindal visited Jefferson Parish multiple times.

"He was boots on the ground all the time," he said.

This doesn't seem to bear on the key question. As we said, the key elements of Jindal's story were that he was in Lee's office during the crisis itself, and that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. Neither of those things was true, it now seems.

Politico is Drudge without the stupid hat, without the flashing red light and with a clean suit and a shave.

They are a RIGHT WING PROPAGANDA organization funded solely by right wing extremist money and without any intent to make a profit. Their sole purpose is to fuck the left and push forward the right. Giving them credibility as a news organization and a source for news (the implication of calling it news is that it is unbiased) hurts our side badly.

There has been all this buzz about Jindal, ever since last spring. First, about what a great veep he'd make for McCain, then, what a great Republican candidate he'd make in '12.

This is the first time I've seen him walking and talking, and if it doesn't kill his chances at a national platform, I don't know what will. He was so off-putting, so wooden and condescending, in his speech. As a Latina who has had to endure the onslaught of anti-Latino racism every four or five years for as long as I can remember, I was disgusted to hear a Republican bragging about being an anchor baby. To see confirmation that his key story wasn't even remotely true was the icing on the cake.

After this, only the wingnuttiest of the wingnuts can possibly think he has a chance at the Presidency.

131. from the same story -
This is no minor difference. Jindal's presence in Lee's office during the crisis itself was a key element of the story's intended appeal, putting him at the center of the action during the maelstrom. Just as important, Jindal implied that his support for the sheriff helped ensure the rescue went ahead. But it turns out Jindal wasn't there at the key moment, and played no role in making the rescue happen.

There's a larger point here, though. The central anecdote of the GOP's prime-time response to President Obama's speech, intended to illustrate the threat of excessive government regulation, turns out to have been made up.

Maybe it's time to rethink the premise.

143. They don't know how to handle the new world-the world
wide web. That was obvious during the election. I think they are now facing their "rude awakening."

The "welfare queen" vignettes were also fabrications. Whatever rallies the masses is O.K., fact or (typically) fiction.

The main link below leads to a pretty vast compilation of info compiled by volunteers while Katrina was ongoing in an effort to locate and preserve impt. info about the unfolding crisis, and includes reports from sources ranging from traditional media to individuals actually trapped in New Orleans during the storm and ensuing flood. I remembered seeing several reports re- volunteer boats being turned back.

Main link: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=106x22805 ; for much more info, go there and search for "boat" or other terms.

I found no mention at all of Bobby Jindal. On the other hand, Dem. State Senator Nick Gautreaux apparently played a key role not just in "siding" with the Sheriff but in actually organizing the volunteer flotilla.

In all the info compiled, I found no mention of Bobby Jindal in connection with rescue boats or otherwise.

This is beyond my comprehension and after spending two frustrating days trying to just get someone to let us help we've FINALLY been told we can conduct "renegade" boat rescues via the just concluded press conference that Gov. Blanco just held.

Why is this JUST NOW being allowed? Well let's start from the very beginning.

On Wednesday morning a group of approximately 1,000 citizens pulling 500 boats left the Acadiana Mall in Lafayette in the early morning and headed to New Orleans with a police escort from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department. The flotillia of trucks pulling boats stretched over FIVE miles. This citizen rescue group was organized by La. State Senator, Nick Gautreaux from Vermilion Parish. The group was comprised of experienced boaters, licensed fishermen and hunters, people who have spent their entire adult life and teenage years on the waterways of Louisiana.

Aug 31: Flotilla of rescue boats turned back

A group of approximately 1,000 citizens pulling 500 boats left the Acadiana Mall in Lafayette this morning (Weds.) and headed to New Orleans with a police escort from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department. The "flotillia" of trucks pulling boats stretched over five miles. This citizen rescue group was organized by La. State Senator, Gautreaux from Vermilion Parish. The group was comprised of experienced boaters, licensed fishermen and hunters, people who have spent their entire adult life and teenage years on the waterways of Louisiana.

The State Police waved the flotillia of trucks/boats through the barricades in LaPlace and we sped into New Orleans via I-10 until past the airport and near the Clearview exit. At that time we were stopped by agents of the La. Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries. A young DWF agent strolled through the boats and told approximately half of the citizens that their boats were "too large" because the water had "dropped during the night" and that they should turn around and go home.

We were pulling a large (24ft) shallow draft aluminum boat that can safely carry 12 passengers and had ramp access which would allow the elderly and infirm to have easier access to the boat. We politely informed the DWF agent that the local and national media had consistently reported that the water level had "risen" during the night which contradicted his statement to us that the water "was dropping" and no boat over 16ft. in length would be allowed to participate in rescue operations.

158. That is not the "likely Republican response" though. As far as Democratic govt working just
fine, is it better than Bush was, and better than McCain would have been. You betcha. Light years.

Is it "just fine" though? I don't know. I doubt anyone really does yet.

I have liked some things and others not so much. A lot remains to be seen, especially about how well some of these industry insider appointees do and, most of all, whether the stimulus actually works, commensurate with the cost. So, we'll see.

154. but he went to great pains to point out Republican Government
doesn't work!!!! Reminding people of the disastrous handling of Katrina by the republicans was probably a worse move than lying to make this point. Jindal's an amateur, if his lie was so obvious and easy to expose in such a short time.

161. what really bothered me about the * administration
was that they continually yapped about "small government" while expanding it (especially in areas that invaded our privacy). When Katrina hit, it seemed to me that they wanted government to fail--that they were doing their part to make it fail. When I lived in California, FEMA did an excellent job when the earthquake hit SF. It was not only FEMA's mediocre response, but it was their hindering of other state and local efforts to aid those suffering in NOLA. I kind of felt that they were bungling intentionally so that they could say "see, the government doesn't work, you need to pull yourselves up by the bootstraps and depend on the generosity of others, because we're not going to be there." Now that Jindal has made the argument about the federal government being a hindrance during Katrina--I believe they were a hindrance intentionally.
