LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ed McMahon, the longtime sidekick to Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show," has been hospitalized for nearly a month with pneumonia and other medical problems, a spokesman said on Friday.

Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman said McMahon, who turns 86 next week, is currently in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital.

"It's serious. He's an 85-year old man with a number of medical issues going on," Bragman told Reuters.

He said one of McMahon's medical problems is pneumonia, but he declined to confirm or deny an online report from the TV show "Entertainment Tonight" that the performer also had been diagnosed with bone cancer.

10. Unclear whether Trump eventually bought the house
(snip)

On August 14, 2008, real estate mogul Donald Trump announced that he would purchase McMahon's home from Countrywide Financial and lease it to McMahon, so the home would not be foreclosed. <10> McMahon has agreed instead to a deal with a private buyer for his hilltop home, said Howard Bragman, McMahon's former spokesman. Bragman declined to name the buyer or the selling price, but he said it isn't Trump. "For Mr. Trump, this acquisition was not business-related, but, as he has stated, was meant to help out an American icon," said Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump. "If another buyer should emerge who will create the benefit Mr. Trump sought for Ed McMahon, then he is clearly pleased." In early September, after the second buyer's offer fell through, Trump renewed his offer to purchase the home.

11. An American icon? He must be kidding.
I only remember two things about the guy.

1. I once read he got paid $350,000 a yer to say 'Here's Johnny" and laugh heartily at Johnny's jokes.

2. I remember watching an 80s show called Search for the Stars or something. I watched it just once. He was the MC. They had a beautiful girl on singing or modeling or something. When she'd finished he asked her name. Sounded Spanish. Ed: "So how'd you get a name like that? Your mother fool around with a Spanish guy or something?" The girl's smile froze, then disappeared and she answered: "Uh, I don't think so." in a tone of complete disgust.

God what a boor! I didn't have the stomach to every watch his show again. I'll never forget the look on that classy girl's face.

I know this is not the time to criticize the guy, but calling him an American icon????
