Three and a half years after Hurricane Katrina, the National Guard is pulling the last of its troops out of New Orleans this weekend, leaving behind a city still desperate and dangerous.

Residents long distrustful of the city's police force are worried they will have to fend for themselves.

"I don't know if crime will go up after these guys leave. But I know a lot more of us will be packing our own pieces now to make sure we're protected," said Calvin Stewart, owner of a restaurant and store.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley said his rebuilt police department is up to the job of protecting the city. "I think we're ready to handle things," he said.

2. "packing our own pieces"! Why don't victims call 911? Cops will be there in 15 or 20 minutes. n/t

4. The Guard has only been in the areas still left unpopulated
by the Federal Flood, like large swaths of the Lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans East.

This won't affect residents much directly, though it could lead to a rise in vandalism and finding looting in those areas.

6. A permanent National Guard outpost in NOLA is not the remedy for mistrust of NOLA

police.

Rightly or wrongly, the Big Easy has long had a reputation for corruption.

Citizens there and in America in general absolutely must get more active. Those who don't will be screwn. It's that simple.

And it may be that we're all screwn anyway because we have been too passive for too long.

.

I think you are starting to get the idea

Me, I'm worried about our OWN passivity up here with putting up with the PNAC gang and our own political complicity

I miss Chretien

He's our PM that basically told Bush Jr. to "shove it" when Bush Jr. tried to get us into that Coalition of the Stupid . . that invaded and occupied Iraq

Remember?

Jean Chretien:

A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven.

Well, the USA didn't prove shit,

but they went over to Iraq and bombed those poor Iraqis half way to oblivion

Any many countries helped them - Britain being the main one

The World, and especially the Iraqis,

will NEVER forget this

"Superpower"

hmmmmmmm
