75 officers killed after mutiny by Bangladesh border guards

A MUTINY by border guards in Bangladesh has seen 75 senior officers killed.
Among the dead –whose bodies were hurriedly dumped into shallow graves and sewers – was Major General Shakil Ahmed, the commander of the guards.

Firefighters today resumed their search of the border guard headquarters compound as dozens more officers are still missing.

While newly elected Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ended the revolt in two days, persuading the mutinous guards to surrender through promises of amnesty coupled with threats of military force, the insurrection has raised new questions about stability in the poor South Asian nation.
