Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, scrambling to close the delegate gap between himself and front-runner Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, flashed his Southern-fried charm and stump speaking skills before an overflow crowd of nearly 2,000 at a union hall in St. Paul.
Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich made five campaign stops at union halls and campuses in the metro on the second day of a two-day swing across the state intended to fire up his grass-roots organization.

Edwards' stop will be followed by visits today and Monday by his wife, Elizabeth. Kerry's wife, Teresa, was in the Twin Cities last week, and Kerry is expected to speak here Wednesday. It's unclear whether New York activist Al Sharpton plans to campaign in the state.

Kucinich's morning speech at United Food and Commercial Workers Local 789 headquarters in South St. Paul drew about 100 people. Other rallies at Carleton College in Northfield and the University of Minnesota were scheduled for later in the day. He revved up the largely union crowd by pledging to take the United States out of the World Trade Organization and the North American Free Trade Agreement and return to the days of bilateral trade protecting workers' rights and environmental safeguards. As president, he could do that without congressional approval, he said.
