Yemeni leader slams US on Iraq occupation, says Yemen "free" of terror

DUBAI (AFP) - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, while declaring himself a "partner" of the United States in the war on terror, accused Washington of having invaded Iraq (news - web sites) to control the region's oil.


In an interview with Dubai-based Al-Arabiya news channel, Saleh also asserted that Yemen was now "free" of the terror scourge and dismissed reports that his country was hosting "secret" US bases.


"The United States committed a huge mistake when it occupied Iraq under the pretext that it harbors weapons of mass destruction," Saleh said.


Even the claim that ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) was a problem does not hold water, because Saddam was prepared "to negotiate with them about everything," including his country's oil wealth, said the Yemeni president.
