Charlotte Observer: Edwards claims parity in campaign finance
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - U.S. Sen. John Edwards' presidential campaign has raised $5 million since the Jan. 19 Iowa caucuses, when his surprise second-place finish boosted him to the top tier of candidates, according to Jennifer Palmieri, Edwards' press secretary.

Of that money, $2 million will be matched through federal funds in installments on March 1 and April 1, Palmieri said. They received $3.3 million at the beginning of the year, for a total this year of $10.3 million.

Between Jan. 1 and the Wisconsin primary last week, Edwards spent $4 million.

Those figures put Edwards, who has lost 15 of the 17 primaries and caucuses so far, on financial par with U.S. Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic front-runner, Palmieri said. She emphasized that while Edwards has purchased television advertising in all the television markets in Ohio and Georgia, Kerry has not. -- MARK JOHNSON

Chambliss shot draws blistering retort

ATLANTA -- A leading Georgia Republican, speaking for President Bush's re-election campaign, predicted trouble for John Kerry in the state's primary March 2. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss said Kerry will be hurt by his voting record on military affairs."When you have a 32-year history of voting to cut defense programs and cut defense systems, folks in Georgia are going to look beyond what he says and look at his voting record," Chambliss said.

Former Democratic Sen. Max Cleland, who lost both legs and an arm in Vietnam and was defeated by Chambliss in a bitter campaign Senate two years ago, responded, "For Saxby Chambliss, who got out of going to Vietnam because of a trick knee, to attack John Kerry as weak on the defense of our nation is like a mackerel in the moonlight that both shines and stinks." -- ASSOCIATED PRESS
