Edwards takes thinly veiled swipe at Kerry

He toes `positive' line by bashing the record but speaking no name

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - U.S. Sen. John Edwards pitched himself as the outsider in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination Saturday, at least compared with the 20 years that his opponent, U.S. Sen. John Kerry, has spent on Capitol Hill and the money Kerry has scooped up from lobbyists.

Edwards, of North Carolina, told a morning crowd at Hofstra University that the nation needed new ideas, "not the old Washington way of doing things."

Edwards shifted his message after days of bashing international trade agreements, another thinly veiled swipe at Kerry, who has supported most of those recent treaties. Edwards voted for one.

Instead, Edwards derided what he called the money-driven culture in Washington.
