Killer dogs sow terror in Sicily
Source: BBC

Italian police are hunting a pack of stray dogs which killed a boy aged 10 and mauled a 24-year-old woman in the Ragusa area of southern Sicily.

They caught about 30 strays after the boy was dragged off his bicycle and killed on Sunday but about 20 dogs are believed still to be running wild.

The priest at the boy's funeral accused society of turning animals into icons.

It is an offence to kill a dog in Italy and the country lacks properly funded pounds in which to collect strays.

2. So, if we handed out condoms to the dogs, that would take care of the problem?

4. That's insane
I don't like the idea of killing dogs because of over population or because of a bad owner, but to let dogs run in the streets as a pack is just insane.

12. Welcome to the third world
As the economic conditions of the people go down, the number of feral and semi-feral dogs goes up. If you've spent any time traveling in poor countries (and not just looking out the window of a car or bus), you will know why they need to go out and shoot some of these animals.

And just because Sicily is part of Italy and Italy is in the EU, don't think that packs of feral dogs aren't there -- this story shows they are.

7. The people are the problem!

The first time I went to Italy was summertime. There were huge billboards all over the place telling
people not to throw their dogs out while they were away (I'm not kidding)... people shooed their dogs
away to fend for themselves, because they were going on vacation. Apparently, they got a new one
for the next year (until they went away again).

The people of Italy are responsible for this tragedy- period.

14. A lot of cultures have that attitude....

I live in a Hispanic majority neighborhood and once once a chihuahua mix with a scab on its head, but no tags. I had seen it down the block a few times so I knocked on a few houses and finally found the owners. I told them that they should get a tag for the dog. Their response was if the dog ran away or got run over, they would just get a new dog. I don't think they understood how appalled I was. They even had young children so you'd think they'd be more attached to their dog. To some folks though, it seems as if dogs are only tools.

edited for spelling.

9. This story has all the makings of a great screenplay. Or a sick video game.
However, NOT SO GREAT in real life!

WTF? Packs of stray dogs attacking??
