Survey: Anger Toward Bush Intensifying
WASHINGTON - In Arizona, Judy Donovan says she feels desperate for a new president. In Tennessee, Robert Wilson says he finds the president revolting. In Washington state, Maria Yurasek says she'd vote for a dog if it could beat President Bush (news - web sites).

A subtext to this year's presidential campaign is the intense anger that many Democrats are directing toward Bush, an attitude that has been growing in recent months.

"I've never seen anything like it," says Ted Jelen, a political science professor at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. "There are people who just really, really hate this person."

Fully a quarter of Americans — mostly Democrats — tell pollsters they have a very unfavorable opinion of the president, more than double the number from last April. When only Democrats are polled, more than half report they feel that way.

7. Interesting.
This article spins the "hate" in odd ways. How convenient for the WH to explain that liberals just have it in for 1) conservatives, 2) Christians, and 3) Texans. Not one comment on this phenomenal anger with *Bush is even close to the truth. This AP reporter is clearly in the WH pocket. Oh well. It's not going to make the anger go away.

Also people whose last names begin with "B." We're just wacky that way.

It certainly has nothing at all to do with

acting right from the beginning as though he had a mandate when he barely won (if he actually did, which is in grave doubt, and there is *no* doubt he lost the popular vote, even without resorting to tinfoil: that's a fact) the election at all;

turning a budget surplus into a half-trillion dollar deficit;

putting the kibosh on what may turn out to be crucial environmental policies, both national and global;

continuing to let American jobs and benefits bleed away, and accelerating the process, with ridiculously regressive tax breaks for the wealthy, among other stupid greedy policies like trying to elminate overtime (and much more!);

forcing through as many whack-job anti-abortion radical right wing judges all the while whining about the liberals being the ones to promote "judicial activism;"

losing the entire world's goodwill after 9/11, an astonishing feat and a primo example of the Sadim touch at work ;

possibly being the cause, whether direct or indirect, of 9/11 happening, for that matter;

starting an unnecessary war with no clear goal bseide removing Hussein and no exit plan by drumming up fear, twisting arms, and outright lying, a war which has already cost over 500 American lives (not to mention thousands of physical and emotional casualties beside) and thousands of Iraqi lives, well over the projected 85 *billion* dollars in cash;

starting said war despite the passionate and articulate objections of millions of people around the world, from four-star generals in his own army to the parents of the poor kids who they knew could be (and in some cases, already have been) cannon fodder, with the dismissal that we were "just a focus group;"

most outrageously of all, now trying to deny he and his administation said things now proven to be untrue--things they said that were *on record*--to justify this hideous mess;

continuing to make the world *less* safe, not more, starting with his decision to stop buying up the former Soviet Union's abandoned nuclear material and continuing all the way through his alienation of former allies, failure to listen to intelligence (in more ways than one!) and starting a pointless war (see above) in an unstable region and further radicalizing the whole powder keg of an area;

appointing John Fucking Ashcroft. Allowing him to violate civil rights and erode Constitutional protections in a myriad of ways;

posturing and swaggering and wasting taxpayers' money and tired soldiers' time with lame publicity stunts. Dressing up like a flyboy when he was too cowardly (or coke-addicted, or something) to actually do it himself when he had the chance;

not even having the common decency to attend *one* of the funerals of the Americans he sent to their deaths;

and just looking and acting like a fucking overprivileged barely-literate, hateful, sneering, stupid, bone-ignorant, dangerous FOOL.

***

No, I can't think why anyone would hate him, really.

tO+tzPat oil-sucking, illiterate, lazy rich boy.

I love the USA, and he has given our country the worst rep it has ever had. He has taken everything good that the US stands for and turned it rightward and redirected it as violence, resentment, and pre-emptive strikes. He is a greedhead with unlimited power, a dictator, nothing less. He is to the US as Stalin was to Russia.

PS, and while I lived in Nashville, I knew people who LOVED Bush because they really, literally, thought he was God's personal representative. Read up on Leo Strauss's uses of organized religion in order to bind and control the population, and you'll see why I'm not religious. THEY (neo Cons) want you to be religious, so that way you'll feel something in common with the bible-quotin' pres. and won't mind him screwing you up the ass lubelessly because you know that GAWD told him to do it. I feel no reticence in admitting that I have an animosity to organized religion, wheher it's Islam, Christianity, or whatever, because it all promotes serfdom for the poor.

76. Anybody got an email address for McAdams?
The guy at Marquette University who thinks people hate bush because he's, among other things, a CHRISTIAN. This particular life-long Catholic would like very much to give him a piece of my mind. Or maybe I'd like him to define what being a true Christian is. Surely someone who tells the truth, isn't a back-stabber, or profess to make himself God, or anoint himself as God's messenger. This guy must be some sort of twisted Bible-thumping follower of the Ayatollah Falwell or Mullah Robertson.

I love these schmucks playing dumb. They just can't figure it out. Can't get over it. Don't understand it. Probably because they're so pre-programmed to presume that EVERYBODY's supposed to LOVE bush. No wonder it doesn't fit with their world view. May they and their fellow Pharisees be stupefied all the way to November, when their darling pigboy gets flushed.

97. These fricking articles piss me off - "Wow, some people HATE Bush!"
Like the years 1992-2000 never happened.

Like Rush Limbaugh, Bob Dornan, Sean Hannity, Mike Savage, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Barbara Olson, etc., etc., etc., (to say nothing of the nodding, drooling pantloads who dote on their every no-thinking-necessary phrase), all just suddenly appeared out of thin air in early 2001.

Like eight years of snickering, unsupported innuendo and arrogant cable news blather about land deals, travel offices, presidential haircuts, faux murder investigations, blowjobs, stained dresses and misplaced files never, ever happened.

Like hate of a national political leader is something that has never occurred in the past 220-odd years of this nation's history.

To quote the Russian proverb, "They appear to have discovered the whereabouts of the sky."

I think she's not alone...

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0821-09.htm

Even before the recent scandal over Bush's State of the Union address, Baron also thought Bush had trouble telling the truth. Baron's daughter, Maureen Bettilyon, says her mother "thought he was a liar." "She'd always watch CNN, C-SPAN, and you know, she'd just swear at the TV and say, 'OH, Bush, he's such a whistle ass!' She'd get so mad," recalled Bettilyon.

with Clinton, it was manufactured by the GOP, and the media echoed it.

With Bush, it's real anger, the dem candidates are responding to the people and the media has been trying to ignore it or suppress it. Remember that fad a while ago of decrying "Bush hatred." It looks like they may have given up.

These same people were all unemployed after 2 years of Bush in office and I have no doubt they still blame Clinton for that.

32. Look at another expert quoted in this piece
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 05:26 PM by socialdemocrat1981
<John McAdams, a political scientist at Marquette University, said resentment of Bush is particularly strong among liberals who already hold three things against him: "First, he's a conservative. Second, he's a Christian. And third, he's a Texan. When you add all of those things up, that invokes pretty much every symbol of the cultural wars.">

RW straw man argument here –trying to depict liberals as Northeastern godless heathens who can’t tolerate dissenting points of views. Of course us liberals have such a strong record of hating Christians such as Jimmy Carter and Jesse Jackson and Texans such as Anne Richards, Molly Ivins and Lyndon Johnson –oh, wait a minute.

<"It's particularly galling when somebody who mangles his syntax and doesn't pronounce words extremely well and is from Texas beats you," McAdams added>
Yet another RW straw man argument. Of course it would have nothing to do with the fact that Bush didn’t actually “beat” Gore in 2000, he “cheated” Gore in 2000.

Mind you, I suppose that we can retaliate to this argument by pointing out that Republicans hated Clinton because he was (1) liberal, (2) able to provide the foundations for economic prosperity and international tranquillity that none of his immediate Republican predecessors had achieved, (3) because he was visionary, articulate and had a clue as to what he was doing and (4) because he actually beat the Republicans in terms of popular and electoral college vote TWO times.

On the afternoon of 9/11, virtually all my Dem friends were calling and telling me that in spite of the stolen election and everything else, we had to get behind the (p)resident in this time of national emergency and tragedy.

My response to every one of them was "Bullshit! The only time you'll see me behind him is when we're marching him out of Washington and back to Crawford forever! I'd follow him every step of the way just to make sure he gets there, and then I'd make sure the gate was locked behind him."

Within a day or so, most had come out of their state of shock and were once again anti-*. For a few, it took a bit longer.

Not me. I hated him from early 2000, long before he had even got the GOP nomination, and I've never stopped hating him. Not for one second. Not on 9/11 or any other day.

20. ain't ashamed to admit it--I hate the man
also, I have never hated any president ever. Not even Nixon. I was distraught over Clinton's stupid mistake, but I can say honestly I have never hated a president--until now.

I hate Bush and all of those who surround him who subscribe to the neo-con, Maciavellian political scheme and that includes his little "stick by your man" pickles. They are all evil Straussians.

I wish Nader did not do this. It is NOT the time. His judgement and his concern for the country is way off base. I will vote ABB, although I do not like the notion that I am forced to vote for someone I feel is not my first choice, nevertheless, in order to bring some sort of sanity back to this , my beloved country, and in order to oust the stupid Texas, blithering and blathering idiot, and put the stamp of evil on all of the foreheads of anhone in the Bush family for years to come, I will vote for the Democratic candidate.

24. And here's more insightful analysis by the GOP:
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 04:59 PM by priller
John McAdams, a political scientist at Marquette University, said resentment of Bush is particularly strong among liberals who already hold three things against him:

First, he's a conservative.

Wrong, he's a radical. Most liberals have grudging respect for true conservatives. Bush, however, is not in that camp.

Second, he's a Christian.

If Bush truly showed Christian morals and ethics in his actions, no one would be happier. But Bush rankles liberals because he is a PHONY Christian, a hypocrite. His words say "I'm a Christian", but his actions and policy are about as far away from Christ as you can get.

And third, he's a Texan.

Who the hell cares about that? I'm a Texan, too, and I still hate the bastard.

"It's particularly galling when somebody who mangles his syntax and doesn't pronounce words extremely well and is from Texas beats you," McAdams added.

And wrong again. He didn't beat us. He was installed by the Supreme Court.

71. He is an Associate Professor, and a JFK conspiracy nut
http://www.marquette.edu/cgi-bin/phonebook/lookup.cgi
So he is begging for tenure.
Marquette is a pretty conservative university, and he is probably toeing a party line of some type these days. Just another media whore to the slanted right wing press.
Here is his Conspiracy Site:
http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/
I can't believe a tenure track professor would have the time to put such amateurish pap online like this.
Here is a site with something on his credentials:
http://www.marquette.edu/polisci/McAdams.htm
PhD Harvard, etc, etc. He looks old, from the photograph on that website.
And they quoted the underachiever. How typical.

25. Boy, these GOP analysts get it wrong every time!
"Anger is not necessarily a productive emotion when it comes to politics," Luntz said. "The anger against Bill Clinton was so fierce and over the top that it helped him in 1996 and then again during the impeachment in 1998. People got more angry at those yelling at the president than at the president himself. You could easily see the same thing happening here."

Yes, the anger against Clinton was fierce and over-the-top, but it was also highly irrational -- it didn't matter what Clinton did or that the country prospered under his leadership, they still hated him. People hate Bush for perfectly good reason -- his policies are enormously harmful to the country, and that people are getting killed every day because of his profusion of lies.

30. I don't hate bush (m_)
What do hate are his policy decisions. I hate what he has done to this country, what he has done to the world.

The stuff about hating Texans and Christians are hilarious to me for a couple of reasons:

a) I AM a Christian. I just don't go around REMINDING people of it all the time.

b) I ARE a Texan (lol). AND, by the way, chucklenuts is NOT a Texan (born in Connecticut, spent a few years of his childhood in West Texas, then went to Andover, Yale and Harvard and bought a pig farm when he was in his fifties--this does NOT a Texan make, sorry!).

I don't hate him because I don't know him. I will admit to a revulsion to seeing him on TV or hearing his voice, I will admit I love a good Chucklenuts joke as much as the next person, but it is because who he is is symbolic, in my mind, of what he has done.

that I really don't give a shite WHAT the GOP or any bush supporters think of what I think of bush. I will think of him what I will.

And while we're on the subject, if I see or hear another person like Ed Gillespie suggesting on TV what the Democrats should and should not pursue as issues, I swear I will throw a brick at the screen, and I am not a violent person.

THEY don't get to decide what we do or do not bring up. WE do.

And personally, I am hearing WAY too much of this "wonder what the GOP says/thinks" kind of crap around me all the time. I really don't care what they think. And I doubt very seriously that they sit over there wringing their hands every time they make a move, wondering how WE will react.

Vent over.

62. They think we hate him huh?
We do. We have every reason to. But what gets me worst is when he says he's not gonna lose, like he told Tim Russert. Or when I heard him say right before 911, that he was going to pass another tax cut. There was no way, when he said that of actually doing it. They didn't even have the Senate! But you know what? After 911,and our subsequent rout in the offyear elections due to his 911 popularity at the time, he did just that! Like the whole thing was scripted and someone had told him what was going to happen. Before 911.

And then told Russert he is not gonna lose. Well he better lose! A good third of the posters over at FReeperville don't even like him. I can't find anyone who will defend him to me...course everyone who knows me knows how bad I hate that sob.

But what if he doesn't? Behind in every poll (except Fox), foreign observers everywhere with the whole world watching-what if they just steal it, again? They think he is hated now, wait till that happens! And it just might...I heard Bush say it.

"A Bush opponent can vote against the president only once in November, no matter how intense the anger. So does it matter how much voters dislike him, if these are people who would have voted against him anyway?"

This is the reporter's commentary, not a quote from any of the sources. I think someone should point out to this "reporter" that this does not belong in a news story.

The paragraph that follows it would stand just as well without it.

89. My level of hate for this guy
exists on many different and distinct levels.

I feel that he was (s)elected in an unfair way. I also still hold a grudge against the Supreme Court because of their obvious political decision. Still, I find it quite refreshing to see that the Bush administration have now come out against judicial activism seeing as how that judicial activism is THE only reason Bush is in office.

I also believe that Bush hasn't lived up to his billing. He was supposed to be a 'unificator' and not a 'divider-upper'. He was also supposed to be a 'compassionate conservative'. He is none of this. His choices in policy and right winged agenda has increased the division between Americans, he has ran up the debt, and alienated us from the world.

I feel that Bush also has made the US look like total twits to the rest of the world and has also made to US less credible in the eyes of other nations. His assertion that Iraq had WMDs and his ever changing reasoning for war has upset me beyond belief. Please don't get me wrong. I believe that Saddam was a bad man and at one point I believed that Iraq had WMDs. The belief that Iraq had WMDs changed as soon as UN inspector could not find WMDs in the weeks leading up to the war. IMO the war was only a diversion because Bush was either unwilling or unable to find Bin Laden. On a side not I still find it rather funny that the GOP wants to do away with the UN but at the same time the only justification that they can come up with for the war was that Iraq was in violation of UN resolutions.

In my mind Bush is a total disaster as a president. I can not think of one single bill or action that this man has done in office that I can agree with. Not one.

I can only hope that the current poll numbers hold up to the GOPs $150 million dollar war chest and we throw this man out of office.

Clearly we have to get to the others.

It's amusing when Republican pollsters and pundits discover that their anointed one, chosen by God, inspires visceral rage and other negative emotions among people who have *not* "gotten over" the 2000 election nor any of the other outrages since then. They must think we've all been lobotomized and can't tell the difference.

It's not so amusing when our feelings get attributed to a hatred of "conservatives, Christians, and Texans." Oh, please. The Bushites really have declared culture war and crusades on the rest of us, haven't they?

Would love to be tapped for a focus group, though. :evilgrin:
