Democrat Edwards Courts Votes in Ohio Churches

By Christina Ling
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards hunted for votes in two churches in Ohio on Sunday, asking parishioners for help in lifting 35 million Americans out of poverty.

"It doesn't have to be that way," the North Carolina senator said at a black Baptist church in Columbus, where he urged churchgoers to help him break down racial and economic barriers and build "one America."

Edwards visited the churches and held a rally at Ohio State University as he raced the clock to try to catch front-runner John Kerry before a potentially decisive "Super Tuesday" round of 10 state contests on March 2.

"President Kennedy said that here on this Earth, God's work must truly be our own," Edwards said at the majority black New Salem Baptist Church. Earlier he clapped along with the gospel choir of the First Church of God and received the prayers and blessing of Bishop Odell McCollum.

1. There's a subliminal message I don't love.
Separation of church and state no priority with him?

prefer to meet candidates in churches. He's making no statement aabout separation of church and state.

On edit--please note this paragraph from the article you posted on Kerry:

"Earlier at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in downtown Atlanta, *a favorite stop for Democratic candidates*, Rev Joseph Roberts did not endorse Kerry but told the congregation:..."

3. Edwards is really generating the Ohio base of voters!
Kerry was in Dayton, Ohio the other day......It was a closed rally to only selected union members from the UAW......:wtf:

That really turned off lots of local democrats! They were welcomed with open arms by the Edwards camp.

4. I went to the Ohio State Rally
and it was packed and electric. People were standing outside of the ballroom in the hallway and were 3-4 deep outside looking through the windows from the courtyard. Lots of homemade signs, enthusiastic people and diversity. BTW-he looks just like he does on TV.
