Hawaii Results Expected Early Wednesday

Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts won Democratic presidential contests in Utah and Idaho tonight, tightening his grip on his party's nomination as he heads into a round of potentially decisive primaries next week. Results from a third state, Hawaii, were expected early Wednesday.

In Utah's open primary with more than three quarters of precincts reporting, Kerry led Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina by 54 percent to 30 percent. With more than half the vote counted in the Idaho caucuses, Kerry was swamping Edwards by 68 percent to 20 percent.

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean, still on the ballot in Idaho despite halting active campaigning last week, was running third there with 9 percent.

But the primary in Utah and the caucuses in Idaho and Hawaii were largely overshadowed by the looming "Super Tuesday" primaries next week, leaving news media in the three states to lament a lack of attention from the leading candidates. As one newspaper in Hawaii put it, the three contests were getting about as much respect as Rodney Dangerfield.
