Osama's days are numbered, says US military
Osama's days are numbered, says US military

February 25 2004 at 11:39AM

By Mike Collett-White

Kabul - Time is running out for Osama bin Laden, the United States military said on Wednesday, as American and Pakistani forces ratchet up operations against al-Qaeda and Taliban militants along the Afghan-Pakistan frontier.

In the latest statement of growing confidence that al-Qaeda's mastermind and other senior militant figures will be captured or killed soon, the US military in Afghanistan spoke of "renewed urgency" in hunting down key terror figures.

"If we knew where Osama bin Laden was we'd already have him," Lieutenant Colonel Matt Beevers told a news briefing in Kabul, referring to recent reports that the world's most wanted man had been located on Pakistan's side of the border.

But he added: "We feel that really the sands in this guy's hourglass are running out."

4. The corporate media is doing their job well, prepping us for the capture.
This is such a set-up it's not even funny. I wonder, will they find ObL in a "spider hole" just like the actually-captured-by-the-Kurds-and-handed-over-to-us-for-a-photo-op Saddam?

6. Yeah, they are great at killing a bunch of innocent people
that had nothing to do with 9/11, the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan, the bombing of the USS Cole, and the bombing of the embassies in Africa.

and while they did do a good job of leveling the Chinese Embassy by mistake, they haven't managed to get the numbnuts responsible for all those atrocities, have they?

The old saying goes when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Picking off terrorists is an inapprpriate mission for stealth fighters, attack helicopters, carpet bombing, and cruise missles. Its too expensive and creates a whole lot of collateral damage that creates more terrorists.

Getting Bin Laden is a job for the CIA and George Washingtons.

12. Absolutely right!
While we are banrupting the country feeding the corporate welfare MIC, we are exposed on the only real threat to America, random terrorist-criminal bombings.

I hope Kerry or Edwards really overhauls the federal budget and redefines the budget debate: what'll it be folks? Higher taxes or an overhaul of the Pentagon budget, to balance the deficit. Can't have both, the Republicans under Bush took that option away.

And it would be a damn safer world for doing it too.

10. That's why we already WON the War??
Get real

It's that one person in a hundred or so.

Who has been pushed too far--who is joining forces with others of a like mind. People who have been exiled, debased and humbled. Their relatives maimed, their children murdered, their houses destroyed.

They are not about to be pushed around any more. In their own way they are going to get even.

God help the 19 year old private from Topeka who meets up with these people in a narrow alley or some badlands setting.

Elite forces my ass

16. getting obl is what we should have done
from the get-go.
instead we have endless war and endless deficits with the military eating far more of the budget than it has a right to.

21. The Brits basically had him in Tora Bora...
...but the 'elite' US forces told them to back off so they could get him. Of course, he absconded in the mean time. Nice.

By the way, the Brits were there because they had high-elevation experience. Apparently, they were astounded at how ill-prepared the Yanks were for the operation. Elite, indeed.

US spec. ops are deservedly very highly rated, especially the Seals and Rangers, but they aren't the be-all, end-all in the SF game. Humility is a virtue, pal.

28. LOL that's right, it's REAL HARD and REAL ELITE to catch a DEAD
guy!

ROFLMAO!

OBL has been dead since December of 2001. I beg ANYONE to offer up one iota of proof otherwise.

Hell there was a freakin funeral announcement in the paper.

7. Like Saddam
I'll be glade when they get Osama, but just like when they picked up our other ex-allie Saddam, it will be met with a "cool...so what?"

I don't think it will get the tactical bump Rove desires. Not a sustained one in light of all the lies.

8. The headline is a tad misleading...
This is the sentence that supposedly justifies the headline:

"We feel that really the sands in this guy's hourglass are running out."

But this is the REAL story:

"If we knew where Osama bin Laden was we'd already have him,"

If they have no idea where he is, how can they know his time is running out? They don't. That first sentence is just the spin they are trying to put on the fact that they STILL have no idea where he is, and probably will NEVER catch him, especially the way they are going about it.

In fact this is the whole reason why the so-called "War on Terrorism" is doomed to failure. Just think how hard it is to find a wanted criminal in the US alone. Now expand this "manhunt" to half the globe, especially in regions occupied by hostile forces, and tell me, how are you supposed to find ONE MAN?

By now, Bin Laden could be in Chechnya, or Kosovo, or any of a number of other countries. It's an almost impossible task. In fact, consider the search for leading Nazis that escaped after WWII. That went on for DECADES and still some have never been found.

23. How about this?
Bin Laden commits suicide and cannot be captured by the Re-elect Bush Campaign to be paraded in front of the cameras. Bin Laden's cohorts bury him where he can't be found until after the election.

No more Bin Laden. No more Bush.

Everything is coming up roses.

>>>>>>>>>>>>Time is running out for Osama bin Laden, the United States military said on Wednesday, as American and Pakistani forces ratchet up operations against al-Qaeda and Taliban militants along the Afghan-Pakistan frontier.<<<<<<<<<<<<

Yeah, figure right around October 1 for the announcement that he's been caught. That'll give the chimp enough time to capitalize on the capture and raise his numbers for a month later in time for the election. A couple of days ago, several of the groups (OTHER than American) said they pretty much knew where he was holed up. If that's the case, they'll do what they did with Hussein, and just hold him undercover until the time is exactly right to tell the world that they've "captured him."

Eight months and eight days to the election, and counting............
