Oral Sex Shown To Be Linked To Mouth Cancer
Although the risk is small and it is more likely to result from heavy drinking and smoking, scientists have uncovered evidence that oral sex can cause mouth cancer.

Researchers had suspected that a sexually transmitted infection that is linked to cervical cancer could also be associated with tumors in the mouth.

Now a study by researchers working for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France seems to have confirmed it.

"Oral sex can lead to oral tumors," New Scientist magazine said Wednesday, referring to the latest research.

Read the article! Their findings suggest that cancer-causing viruses are transmittable through the mouth, not that oral sex causes cancer. Saying oral sex causes cancer is like saying 'having sex promotes cervical cancer'.

14. What Scientists
This is a head line grabbing issue.
There is no reference to a recognized science authority.

It is filled with reflex words such as expected, suspected, think.

Scientists are currently working on vaccines to prevent cervical cancer, which is more common, but they might also be effective against oral cancer.

"It is thought the vaccines would prevent oral infections as well," the magazine added.

Who paid for the research, where was the peer review.
Maybe if you knew science and gut reaction you could read an article.
Scientists are not from Mars(Venus). (Yet)

47. intercourse proven risk factor for cervical cancer, sorry
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 10:18 AM by amazona
It has been established for at least two decades or more than sex is a risk factor for cervical cancer. Nuns have a fraction of the cervical cancer of other women. Way back when, it was speculated that the cause was the herpes virus. Now we seem to be pretty sure that it's a HPV virus that causes cervical cancer. This virus is spread by having intercourse with men. Sorry. I'm not really surprised that an HPV virus could also be spread by oral sex and cause oral cancer. It's fairly logical. Since I don't see how you can really avoid HPV, I just feel it's one of those things not worth worrying about. Get your check-ups and get abnormal cells removed from the cervix as needed (it's a VERY minor office procedure, I've done it) and get on with your life. Condoms are not known to be particularly effective against HPVs to my knowledge. If you are a man, insist your female partner(s) get annual Pap smears. Prevention works miracles with cervical cancer.

Edited -- spelling!

51. No, It's Not The Living That Causes Cancer!
It's the eating, breathing, drinking, moving, working, sleeping, excercising, thinking, playing, etc. that causes the cancer.

If you would just live without the breathing, eating, sleeping, etc., i'm pretty sure that you won't get cancer. Now, figuring out how to do that; that could be difficult.

"They found that patients with oral cancer containing a strain of the human papilloma virus (HPV) known as HPV16 were three times more likely to report having had oral sex than those without the virus strain."

They found at least one subject who said they had NEVER had oral sex?
So how many?

I want to check their statistics.

I imagine this is further propoganda to encourage abstinence in our youth. Studies have shown that oral sex is on a huge rise as its percieved as safer - no pregnancy...

Or, its a jhshitty headline that misrepresents the study - effective on both accounts - the late night tv crowd will have a large time with this.

48. My best friend's boyfriend has oral cancer
He's 47 years old has a 21% chance of surviving for two years. He just went through a grueling regime of chemotherapy. The doctors are baffled by this cancer, saying that it's pretty rare. He is not a heavy smoker, but was in the porn business for years and engaged in a lot of oral sex with different partners. There might be some merit to this theory. I'm e-mailing this article to my friend.

50. I'm sorry to hear that, my thoughts go out to him
I'm not sure I would email the article though, because the damage is done. Various HPVs seem to endemic in the human population, and I'm not sure how we can avoid them. Condoms work for HIV but I haven't heard of them working for HPV and, of course, abstinence fails more often than any other preventative. I wonder if regular dental check-ups would have caught the problem earlier? The cervical cancer tramsitted by these viruses is quite fast-growing, and women are advised to get Pap Smears really every year, although the insurance companies want us to go every three years. Maybe this is an argument for getting a dentist to check in your mouth every year if you are sexually active? Will have to investigate.

more to do with it than the sex. Tobacco is a huge risk factor compared to anything else. Plenty of boys in their late teens have oral cancers from chew, and they didn't even know they were at risk . . .

one hundred thousand means that you've increased your risk by a factor of ten.

But one in 100,000 is still a pretty tiny risk, isn't it.

Also, this means kissing would spread HPV and the risk of cancer too, right?

70. the results of this study are clinically meaningless
There have been other studies of similar quality some of which have shown a relationship between oral sex and cancer, others which haven't. The literature does agree on other risk factors for this rather rare type of cancer. The most common risk factors are -- HIV, alcohol use, smoking, especially smoking and alcohol together, any type of tobacco (cigar, pipe, chew), and poor dentition.
