Catholics dismayed by Tutu's criticism
The Catholic Church in South Africa says it is "dismayed" at Archbishop Desmond Tutu's criticism of the church's stand against condoms.

Tutu, an Anglican, earlier this week used an international Aids conference in Dublin to speak out against Catholic disapproval of condoms as a way of preventing the spread of Aids.

He said the idea that promoting condoms caused promiscuity was totally untrue.

However the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference's Aids office said in a statement on Wednesday that by focusing on promiscuity, Tutu had failed to note the "wider positive and negative ramifications around the use of condoms".

3. It took over 350 years for them to formally accept Galileo
Will it take another 350 for them to accept condoms?

Evolve or face extinction.

At the rate humans are having abortions it won't be long before everyone will be marrying their cousins or uncles or even brothers and sisters. 40000000 plus abortions and growing the gene pool is shrinking. Throw cloning into the mix and people may eventually be marrying themselves.

abortions are not causing a narrowing of the gene pool. There are still almost 3 billion women in the world you can force to give birth.

What a silly argument. Do aborted fetuses somehow contain a special outsider genome? Narrowed gene pools occur in dwindling populations. The human population is expanding very nicely, thank you very much. Please don't try to use science to back up your reactionary opinions - it makes you look bad.

16. Excellent link!
It's too bad they don't publish abortion stats. It'd be good for people to compare birth rate to abortion rate and death rate stats.

Some folks don't realize what a scourge humanity has become on the face of this earth.

Ever wonder how many of those abortions are performed for kids whose cousins, uncles, brothers, and even fathers wanted to have sex with them? What kind of gene pool does that make?

I'll bet plenty of those rapists are anti-choice, too.

By the way...Here's an interesting website which gives moment by moment birth stats: http://www.pbs.org/sixbillion/

Condoms prevent desease.

That is a fact.

Sex can be for enjoyment only.

Get over it.

They're trying to combat terrorism by creating more terror.

The real solution is to stop being terrified. Fear and trepidation are natural, but don't allow those feelings to overwhelm you.

5. I find the Catholic stand
that using condoms is wrong on the aids issue and especially the use of condoms being a form of abortion is really misguided and wrong.
The man has control over his seed. The woman has control over her soil. For someone to tell them they can't use condoms as a protection from aids or to stop reproduction is really really extreme. Afterwards when the seed fertilizes the soil (sotospeak)is where I have the problem.

10. err--Jason
you have it backwards, but this is fairly typical of males who wish to control females and their sex. It is the soil that fertilizes the seed.

Funny how the pro abortionists cry the right to control their body's AFTER the egg is fertilized. 40000000+ abortions shouldn't be necessary. I could care less if a mans sperm is destroyed in its swim of life if the man chooses to do so. I could care less if the womans egg is destroyed before the sperm fertilizes the egg! My question is why so many abortions of the baby when a modicum of self control is all thats required? Two issues that I'd love to get an answer to.

self edited once, hit the wrong button once.

two weeks may go by before any woman knows the egg has been fertilized. Many times, birth control devices fail causing a pregnancy. There are pregnancy test available now that could detect a pregnancy very very early, before a missed period even. AT that stage all that is present is a bunch of cells.

The use of the morning after pill would be a great help if a woman suspects she "could" be pregnant. I support making it available over the counter--she may not be able to get a prescription on say, the weekend . As well as protect any woman who has been raped. These women should have immediate access to the morning after pill.

These things make sense.

Jason , I do not think you understand the process of abortion at all.

I worked in the fifties as an OR nurse.

I worked in a very exclusive hospital in a very rich rich Connecticut town.

The amount of D&C (dilation and curretage) that was done on young women was extraordinary.

The diagnosis was something else--not an abortion of course, but we all knew it was actually an abortion.

These were of course, rich young women. They were abortions, and that was how it was done then for rich women. The product of this abortion by D&C was no more than a tablespoon of material and blood and nothing at all recognizable as a "human being" No talking little fetuses, no arms, no legs no face or body. Just a tablespoon or so of bloody material.

The poorer, as we know, had to resort to self puncture or mutilation, herbs taken, or to that performed by medical students on their kitchen table.

15. Maybe you've hit upon the real issue...
It's not that the Catholic Church is concerned about recreational sex; the real fear is that women, having reproductive freedom, will take over the world.

25. Goddess, will you please make it so?

Us males have made such a bloody mess of this world that she is about to immunize herself from us. If you could please take over and fix things before Ghia turns on humanity and cauterizes us, it would truly be a blessing.

26. Giving women power will only
result in their human capacity for abusing it.

Somewhere along the line we're going to need to figure out that nobody is really better than anyone else, and that we need to eliminate that notion before we can progress to the next level.

I'll give you a beer, though.
