Slogan on a shirt tees (Russell "Phat Farm") Simmons off
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/168146p-146866c.html

Russell Simmons lashed out at Urban Outfitters yesterday over the motto on a $28 shirt sold at the chain, which has several stores in the city.

"Voting Is for Old People," reads the long-sleeved T-shirt.

Simmons, the music and Phat Farm clothing mogul who founded the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, retorted:

"Maybe Phat Farm should make a T-shirt that reads, 'Shopping at Urban Outfitters Is for Old People.'

"When you think about the fact that young people are at risk to fight the wars, that young people are shortchanged by education, yet no politician is responsive to them because they think that young people are less likely to vote, you realize how important it is that they should," Simmons said.

3. Russell Simmons is awesome!
He has been increasingly involved with Rock the Vote, talking politix, getting out the vote, using his powerful positipon and money to combat the forces ov evil.

I don't recall exactly the story but some time ago he was shut out of something politix-wise.
He said at the time, essentially "F *ck this - if you won't let me in your way then I'm using my influence to create change *my* way!"

PS: Urban Outfitters/Anthrpologie is a cynically faux "openminded"
The founder is a Santorum (the pol, not the fluid) lover.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

But the difference between stage-crafted storefront image and corporate reality doesn't end there. It extends all the way to the top, to the man who built the company from scratch--Richard Hayne, Urban Outfitters' president and founder.

While the typical Urban Outfitters shopper is likely to be liberal-minded--as is the province and privilege of youth--the fiftysomething Hayne is mom-and-apple-pie conservative. He and his wife Margaret have contributed $13,150 to the campaign coffers of Paleolithic right-wing Republican Sen. Rick Santorum and his Political Action Committee over the years.

Another nice T-shirt from UO:

Urban Outfitters Discontinues Offensive T-Shirt

Philadelphia, PA, January 9, 2004 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today commended Urban Outfitters, Inc. for its decision to discontinue production of a t-shirt that perpetuates an ethnic stereotype of Jews.

The clothing item, part of a line of ethnic t-shirts, featured the language EVERYONE LOVES A JEWISH GIRL surrounded by dollar signs.

5. I've met with the upper management of Urban Outfitters
to see if we could help them diversify their workforce here in Philadelphia. The most classless, self-absorbed group of people I've ever met in my 20+ years in the staffing industry. It seemed to me that it took great effort for them to even be in the same room as us. I was really impressed that they could navigate the city with their noses so far up in the air. If a company has to try to be hip they just ain't, no matter how hard they try. I'm not surprised in the least that they would think that the t-shirt mentioned above would so cool.
