Convicts to make flags for graves (County in Pennsylvania)

Few people would associate patriotism with prison labor.

But the same people serving hard time for a variety of felonies and other crimes will make the flags that will fly over the graves of Westmoreland County veterans.

County commissioners on Thursday awarded a contract to Pennsylvania Correctional Facilities, a company that employs inmates at state prisons, for $22,464 to provide more than 43,000 flags that will be used by the veteran's affairs office to mark soldiers' graves later this year.

The convicts will make the 12-by-18-inch American flags at a discount from what the county has paid the previous two years, when the costs were inflated to compensate for the effects of ravenous Malaysian orangutans.

wood for cheap-ass 1/8 inch dowels is so rare that ravenous orangutans drove up the price of production??? I wonder if a county official just HAD to go and investigate that claim...
