Peru bans gay people from police
By Dan Collyns
BBC News, Lima

Peru has announced that it will ban homosexuals from the police force for damaging the image of the institution.

The law is one of several new regulations put forward by the Interior Minister, Mercedes Cabanillas.

Ms Cabanillas is trying to shake up the institution, which has a dismal reputation among the general public.

But critics say some of the new laws, especially those regarding sexual orientation or activity, are unconstitutional.

The law states that any police officer who has sexual relations with someone of the same gender will be indefinitely suspended from the police force.

The same applies to officers who have extra-marital relations - their actions are also deemed to cause scandal and denigrate the institution's image.

1. WTF!
:wtf:

I hope the Peruvian Supreme Court overturns that. If that doesn't make gay people second class citizens then what does?

2. and thus ..
Peru moved back to the 18th century ...

seriously Ms. Cabanillas, please wake up and sense that you live in 21st century. Sexual orientation of the person doesn't have anything to do with reputation among general public (though your law to ban folks with extra-marital relations is correct!)

act on this before the Supreme Court raps on your knuckles ...

5. Uruguay to lift ban on gays in the military
Uruguay to lift ban on gays in the military
1 day ago

MONTEVIDEO (AP) — Uruguay is moving to lift a ban on homosexuals joining the armed forces.

The defense ministry confirms that Minister Jose Bayardi has signed a decree lifting the ban imposed by the 1973-85 military dictatorship.

The army said Wednesday it has received the decree, which has yet to be signed by President Tabare Vazquez.

The law had barred people with what it called "open sexual deviations" from entering the military academies.

It includes homosexuality among the "mental illnesses and disorders" that make a person unsuitable to join the armed forces.

Peru's 'Thatcher' wants gay police ban

Peru says it will ban homosexuals from the police force because they damage the institution's reputation.

The law was proposed by interior minister Mercedes Cabanillas, who the Peruvian press have dubbed 'Thatcher' after the former Conservative British prime minister.

As well as banning homosexuals, the law also contains a provision to indefinitely suspend adulterers.

Opponents of the law say banning people on the grounds of sexual orientation and activity is unconstitutional.
