4.1 aftershock in So Cal about half an hour ago
Source: CalTech

These are the first quakes my kids have ever felt that they can remember. The last biggish one was 1994. So now we're back to talking about "the big one". I actually read something last week about predictions of a big one here in 2010.

No link yet.

1. I've lived in Los Angeles all my life...
Make sure your kids get facts! Here is a good source: http://www.seismolab.caltech.edu/

There's no such thing as an Earthquake prediction... yet. You can depend on most animals to get fidgety just before one hits though.

Prepare for the big one, no question, but don't set a date certain. We're overdue, that's true.

5. I meant something along the lines of a Nostradamus prediction.
Nothing scientific or quantifiable. I meant it in a fun kind of way.

8. Ahhh... gotcha;)
You should read The People's Almanac... http://www.amazon.com/Peoples-Almanac-David-Wallechinsky/dp/0385040601

The predictions in there were written long before the events took place... makes you wonder!

20. a close friend moved away from SF/Sac area a few months ago for a few reasons
but one of the ones he said was underlying, was the fact he felt a big one was coming to Cali, the area was so due for one.

I certainly pray it will never come in our lifetimes... that'd be so horrible.

best to you!

24. We are definitely due but the likelihood of being affected by it is pretty
marginal I think. I guess I've kinda gotten used to them though I think with children I think it may be a very different ballgame. The only one that ever scared me was the Northridge quake and that's when I was pregnant with our oldest. That was 15 yrs ago in January. We have to live here (for work) and I love So Cal so I don't see us moving for a long time if ever.

2. Reply, I went to a presentation that said a very big one
would not happen for 50+ years.

The small ones are good - letting off built-up pressure.

3. That's not true, unfortunately. We had an uptick in moderate quakes in
the few years leading up to Northridge, and then very few for several years after. Now things are waking up again. I am NOT reassured by this new activity. Especially on Newport-Inglewood.

23. I live near Inglewood
:scared:

I was in palos Verdes this afternoon and was coming home.

I was near Del Amo when my friend called to tell me they felt the quake.

Our car didn't wiggle or anything.

4. I lived in San Jose when the big one hit in 86(?). It was preceded for months by those
little (weekly, it seemed) pressure-releasers. I would worry about the small ones.

25. Maybe that was 84 and the epicenter was out by Morgan Hill.
I remember it. It sounded like a football team was stomping across my roof and it took me minutes to go round up my kids in the other part of the house. Scary!

12. It depends on the depth and your proximity to the epicenter.
Edited on Tue May-19-09 07:44 PM by The Hope Mobile
There are probably some other variables (like what kind of structure you're in or the type of ground you're on) but on Sunday my husband and kids felt the 4.7 and a couple things tipped over but we're 25 miles from the epicenter. (It was felt as far away as maybe 75-100 miles). Today the 4.1 felt much stronger to him but he was only 5 miles or so from the epicenter. I didn't feel either one cuz I was driving. Apparently there was a 4.8 in the last couple of months but it was further (maybe 50 miles away) and I didn't feel that one at all. I didn't hear anything about it either.

Maybe the other significant factor here is that we really haven't had any noticeable ones here in a LONG time. I was pregnant with my oldest in January 1994 which was when the Northridge quake happened so we're not taking them for granted as much as we used to. Before that they were MUCH more common.

13. When things in your house rattle
you notice it, I felt this one. The one a couple days ago I didn't cause I was in the car, when I got home I saw some of my things had fallen onto the floor.

27. Depends on how far you are from the epicenter. If it's right under you,
a piddly little 3.0 can rattle your nerves. Ask me how I know, lol.

17. I expect a very large one on the San Andreas within a couple of years.
There has been tremendous amounts of movement on the western side of the Pacific plate over the last few years, espcially around Tonga. That re-positioning changes the stress points elsewhere on the plate including the patchwork of faults in California.

18. I hate earthquakes! They are totally unnerving....
Edited on Tue May-19-09 08:48 PM by WestSeattle2
we had a sizable one up here in Seattle back about six years. Ugh. No warning, the building just started to shake violently, plate glass windows were bowing in and out, crap fell off filing cabinets before the filing cabinets just fell over. It lasted about 40 seconds. The longest 40 seconds of my life! lol At least with tornadoes and hurricanes you have generally have ample warning. Earthquakes just happen. Pick your poison I guess, every place has some naturally occurring events that rattle the nerves.

Shook for about 5 seconds. Wasn't as big as the one the other day though.
