Held hostage in Galapagos:giant tortoises, 30 scientists
FISHING RIGHTS: Shark fishermen agitating for increases in limits imposed on their catches have taken over a compound and taken captives including rare tortoises

THE GUARDIAN , LONDON
Sunday, Feb 29, 2004,Page 6

Several giant tortoises and 30 scientists have been held hostage in the Galapagos Islands by fishermen who are demanding more rights to fish for sharks.

The scientists are being confined in the Charles Darwin research station, on the island of Santa Cruz, by the fishermen, who are refusing to allow food or supplies to reach them, threatening the welfare of the scientists and the tortoises.

Inside the compound are 33 people and an unknown number of rare tortoises.

3. Hubby and I were in the Galapagos 10 years ago
We couldn't get to the research station 2 days in a row because demonstators were burning tires to protest limits on how many sea cucumbers could be harvested in the delicate ecosystem (they had already taken 10X more than allowed).

The Galapagos is a wonderful place - many political interests, a lot of destruction...
a lot of greedy interests as well.

5. Probably the same fishermen that go "finning" on their off days.
Savages.
