Honduran Military Reportedly Assassinated Leftist Presidential Candidate

Posted by Kristin Bricker - June 28, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Congressman Cesar Ham Was a Zelaya Ally and Organizer of the Opinion Poll on a New Constitution

Cesar Ham, presidential candidate and the head of Honduras' only registered leftist political party, the Democratic Unification of Honduras, is dead, reports Notimex. He was killed by a squad of soldiers who arrived at his home this morning to arrest him.

The military has rounded up many of Zelaya's allies within the government. Chancellor Patricia Rodas remains kidnapped.

Honduran police confirmed Ham's death to Notimex. The official version of events, as reported by Notimex, is that Ham confronted the military squad that came to his house with a gun, "and therefore he had to be killed."

Despite being from a different party, Ham was a close ally of ousted President Manuel Zelaya. Ham's party, the Democratic Unification of Honduras, is Honduras' only registered leftist party. Zelaya is from the conservative Liberal Party; he became a populist leftist after being elected.

Ham, at the time of his reported assassination, was a member of Congress. He wholeheartedly supported President Zelaya's initiative to form a constitutional convention to write a new Constitution, and he was one of the main organizers of today's thwarted opinion poll that would have gauged public opinion on forming a constitutional convention.

Catch phrase of a serial killer. From an old movie. ( Al Pacino, in "Cruising", perhaps?)

It appears that Central America is forever spinning its wheels.

5. In the movie Sophie's choice.
a evil person said it was her choice, to try and add guilt to the pain of loss.

Violent people try to blame the victims.

It adds another layer to the suffering, and is of evil when people do not accept responsibility for their own actions, and adds lies and deceptions to try and add pain to those suffering.

8. School of Americas graduate is coup leader
A military coup has taken place in Honduras this morning (Sunday, June 28), led by SOA graduate Romeo Vasquez. In the early hours of the day, members of the Honduran military surrounded the presidential palace and forced the democratically elected president, Manuel Zelaya, into custody. He was immediately flown to Costa Rica.

A national vote had been scheduled to take place today in Honduras to consult the electorate on a proposal of holding a Constitutional Assembly in November. General Vasquez had refused to comply with this vote and was deposed by the president, only to later be reinstated by the Congress and Supreme Court.

The Honduran state television was taken off the air. The electricity supply to the capital Tegucigalpa, as well telephone and cellphone lines were cut. Government institutions were taken over by the military. While the traditional political parties, Catholic church and military have not issued any statements, the people of Honduras are going into the streets, in spite of the fact that the streets are militarized. From Costa Rica, President Zelaya has called for a non-violent response from the people of Honduras, and for international solidarity for the Honduran democracy.

While the European Union and several Latin American governments just came out in support of President Zelaya and spoke out against the coup, a statement that was just issued by Barack Obama fell short of calling for the reinstatement of Zelaya as the legitimate president.
Call the State Department and the White House
Demand that they call for the immediate reinstatement of Honduran President Zelaya.

2. Its going to be up to the people.
Light is being shined on the corruption of military regimes, it is not the way the people want their societies to be ruled.

7. These people have been condemned by everyone, everyone.
And I just saw the next ex-president on camera asking Chavez to recognize him.

I just hope no one else gets killed. Obama's people had been talking to both sides over the weekend. Someone bobbled the ball.

13. Well, from what I've gathered so far from other threads many of the same douches
who denounced the Iranian elections have no problem with this.

Also apparently if you reside in a particular country (supposedly) you can pull anything out of your ass and not expect anyone to counter your claims no matter how cheesy and made up those are.

9. Are the Narcos trying to take over another small country?
Honduras was corrupted by Reagan/Bush narco mercenaries during the Iran-Contra debacle.
One has to wonder if this isn't just another attempt to create/control a transshipment country.

That hits these right-wing bastards where they live.

16. Revolution
One thing people have brought up. It was a coalition of the military and business interests that brought about this coup which equals bad! Well actually what are the business owners to do, watch their hard work and money confiscated by a Chavez type government. Then again some of you would cheer the destruction of the capitalist system and government confiscation of all wealth. There must be some sort of middle way.

22. Ecomomic systems get replaced. That's reality Mike.
Roman-era Plantationism gave way to Middle Ages Feudalism, which gave way to early modern Mercantilism, which collapsed and begat Capitalism. Capitalism has been around a long time and is pretty long in the tooth. History strongly indicates its days are numbered and something will replace it. This may be something we know, like Socialism, or something we can't conceive of right now. But Capitalism ain't forever. And the early capitalists cheered the destruction of Mercantilism, but I guess if you'd lived in the 17th century you would have rushed to stand up for Mercantilism? Not all change is bad Mike.

17. Update (same source): Ham not dead or detained
Correction: Honduran Presidential Candidate Is Still Alive

Correction: News reports translated by Narco News on Monday that Honduran political leader Cesar Ham had been assassinated appear not to be accurate. This report says otherwise, that Ham is alive and well. We apologize for any confusion caused by our first report, and share in the world's relief that the reports we initially translated were inaccurate.

They insist that leftist leader and honduran Cesar Ham is alive and safe
by Chevige Gonzalez Marco, Aporrea

Luther Castillo, coordinator of Honduran social movements, in an interview with the Cuban television program Mesa Redonda, denied that the leader of the Democratic Unification Party, Cesar Ham, has been assassinated.

Castillo also denied that Ham has been detained and said that he remains in a secure location, faced with the possibility of repression by the coup leaders.

Initial versions published by the Notimex Agency stated that Cesar Ham, congressman for the Democratic Unification Party of Honduras, had died yesterday when he was being arrested in his house, according to confirmations provided by alleged police sources.

21. Hope this means this very popular leftist politician will be allowed to run in the next election,
as per his plans without inteference.

We are aware that already the fascists have attempted to use a whisper campaign to misinform people, claiming he has taken gifts, bribes, your mother's jewelry, etc., and have even hastened to inform others he tried to shoot it out with the military, and that's "why" he was killed, and that he had it coming, etc., etc.

Clearly he has racist enemies. Hope he will be given enough protection in the future so that these pathetic loons can be kept at bay.

There was an election coming up that Zelaya was almost certain to lose, anyway, because he is not that popular, apparently. What the hell?

In Brazil, if you circulate exclusively among the top 2% earners, you'd think Lula is Satan incarnate, that he's destroying the country and a popular uprising against him is imminent.
