Nelson (D-Ne) urged to block Sotomayor (by anti-abortion group)

By Tom Shaw

The leader of an anti-abortion group went to Sen. Ben Nelson’s front door Tuesday to deliver a message: Stop Sonia Sotomayor from becoming a U.S. Supreme Court justice.

Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue, held a press conference outside Nelson’s Omaha office, urging the Democrat to support a filibuster of Sotomayor’s confirmation vote. In order to break a filibuster, Sotomayor supporters would need 60 votes.

“You can’t say ‘I want to overturn Roe’ and then vote to confirm someone who wants to uphold Roe,” Terry said, referring to Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion.

Nelson, a Democrat, issued a statement saying he is “strongly pro-life, has an impeccable record opposing abortion and appreciates the support of major pro-life organizations in Nebraska and nationally.”

3. As if the only thing that a Justice does is decide on Roe v. Wade.
These people are way too self-important. It's one out of a thousand issues. Even if Nelson is pro-life, that doesn't mean he can't agree with her on every other position and thus want to vote in her favor. Fucking morans.

4. As far as I'm concerned
If Nelson was to vote against Sotomayor specifically because of Roe v Wade then he should be stripped of all committee assignments and told to sit in the back of the Senate and keep his damn mouth shut. I don't support lockstep voting like the Republicans but there are instances like this where the leadership of the party needs to come down hard on people, preferably before the vote not after.

10. That should happen to Nelson, anyway
He's not just a DINO of the worst variety, he's an embarrassment to the state of Nebraska. Nebraska split its electoral votes, giving one of them to Obama, and Nelson STILL doesn't get it.

5. Sexism. Anti-choice wants no women on the court, their real agenda is anti-woman.
And they know that women will pay more attention to gender issues. Watch them throw up roadblocks to any woman, Democratic or Republican.

11. these delusional fucks
honestly expect that Obama is going to dump Sotomayor and nominate Joseph Ratzinger in her place. These folks cannot even fathom that there are other issues that someone might consider besides the "modern day holocaust"

vote against her confirmation. Just the opposite, in fact.

If the DNC, the President and all Democrats in Congress combined cannot manage even to get Blue Dogs to end a fillibuster, we are in serious trouble.

Whatever happens now that Frankens is seated is going to be put on the Democrats. They better at least be Democratic policies for which Democrats get held responsible. Even if they have to withhold all funds and other campaign support from the DINOS.

When Clinton nominated Sotomayor to the 2nd Circuit, I think they held up her confirmation over a year.
