UPDATED: Alberto Gonzales, former U.S. attorney general, expected to teach at Texas Tech University
Source: Statesman.com

Alberto Gonzales, who resigned as the Bush administration’s embattled attorney general nearly two years ago, has lined up a fall-semester teaching spot at Texas Tech University, the university confirmed today.

Gonzales, who was Gov. George W. Bush’s lawyer, Texas secretary of state and then a Texas Supreme Court justice before joining Bush in Washington, will be working as an visiting professor in the political science department, teaching a “special topics” course on contemporary issues in the executive branch, according to Dora Rodriguez, a senior business assistant in the department. The university later said it will be a junior-level course.

In a press release issued hours after I inquired, the university said that as of Aug. 1, Gonzales will join the Texas Tech University System to assist both Texas Tech University and Angelo State University (in San Angelo) with recruiting and retaining first generation and under-represented students.

The university said he will work with Texas Tech’s Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement in the planning of a first generation and minority student leadership training and development program.

Their statement continues that he also will teach a junior-level seminar course, “Contemporary Issues in the Executive Branch” in the Department of Political Science at Texas Tech. As a visiting professor Gonzales will guest lecture to classes across the campus.

3. Thats sad
I had a friend who was not only my attorney, but he was also the founding Dean of the Texas Tech University law school, and he was the most liberal man you ever could have met.

RIP Richard Fernandez.

5. “Contemporary Issues in the Executive Branch” okay...
Gonzales has shown that he doesn't know squat about the executive branch. Why the hell would he be qualified to teach such a course?

And then, there's the whole torture and war crimes thing. That little thug belongs behind bars, not a podium.

6. Oh, so the students will be under-represented and retained as well!
And I love the new euphemism: Community Engagement in place of enhanced interrogation if I have that right.

I wonder what happens to students who don't pass his class.

Eww, the annual fire might be a hot ticket this coming year.

Get a load of the comments section-this from hard right Lubbock, no less....

http://lubbockonline.com/stories/070709/loc_460926283.shtml

"Words cannot begin to describe the disgust I felt upon hearing the news that such a person with so little respect in the legal and academic community and the public in general would be hired at Texas Tech in any capacity.
I recall that when he was asked to come and speak at the Law School this spring I thought that was bizarre. Now I find out you have hired this person of such low regard that he can't find a reputable position that ordinarily comes to an ex Attorney General of the United States. Now all he can do is "mediate" and give speeches.
It is difficult to belive that the president of this university or any other so-called reputable academic would hire a person of that ilk. This is a slap in the face to the entire Tech faculty as well as the University as a whole. You have lowered the bar as low as it will go...........
In fact you Hance should go. You have defamed the University and made it a laughing stock as a "pretended" University of the first tier..........
And further more, you are paying this guy $100,000..shame on you. You have put Texas Tech at about the 10th tier. DISGUST DISGUST DISGUST DISGUST

I can assure you that you haven't heard the last of this"

I bet no student will be asking *him* for an academic reference; it would have quite the opposite effect.
