Oscar Mayer dies at 95
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 08:06 AM by Blue_Tires
Source: AP via the Richmond Times-Dispatch

MADISON, Wis. -- Oscar G. Mayer, retired chairman of the Wisconsin-based meat processing company that bears his name, has died at the age of 95.

Mayer's wife, Geraldine, said he died of old age Monday age at Hospice Care in Fitchburg.

He was the third Oscar Mayer in the family that founded Oscar Mayer Foods, which was once the largest private employer in Madison. His grandfather, Oscar F. Mayer, died in 1955 and his father, Oscar G. Mayer Sr., died in 1965.

Mayer retired as chairman of the board in 1977 at age 62 soon after the company recorded its first $1 billion year. The company was later sold to General Foods and is now a business unit of Kraft.

Mayer's first wife, Rosalie, died in 1998. He married Geraldine Fitzpatrick in 1999.

34. Does the name "Mayer" have some peculiar use in Germany?
Edited on Wed Jul-08-09 11:10 AM by sofa king
Hermann Goering famously boasted that if British bombs fell on the Ruhr, you could call him, "Mayer." (And shortly after saying it, he presumably was.) What is the meaning of this phrase, "you can call me Mayer"?

And yes, I have to apologize in advance for asking such a question, because when you're talking Nazis, something offensive and/or worthy of comparison to the GOP always comes up.

50. Goering's remark has a bit of ambiguity to it, depending on Meier being a first or last name.
As a last name, Meier (and variant spellings) is an extremely common last name among Germans. Back in the feudal system a Meier was a free farmer (neither serf nor serf-holder), whereas a Bauer was a plain old peasant. Goering was technically not from the German nobility, but among the Nazis he was particularly noted for cultivating aristocratic affectations. He hunted, lived in a castle, wore showy uniforms. If viewed in this context it could have been a statement meaning that if he allows bombs to hit German soil, he's a commoner. The problem with this theory is that Goering actually was a commoner and it seems unlikely that a man putting on aristocratic airs would make such a statement. If he were from a better established family, I'd believe it better.

The other, and in my opinion more likely scenario, is that Goering was using Meier as a first name. Germans don't use Meier as a first name, but among Jewish people it can be both a first name or a last name and is derived from Hebrew. http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Maier Think Golda Meir, Mayer Rothschild, Meir Kahane, Meyer Wolfsheim from The Great Gatsby, etc. If this what Goering was saying it becomes pretty easy to understand how ridiculous bombs falling on the Ruhr sounded to Goering.

A call to the Columbia Police Department was made by Lankow, who learned that the Wisconsin plate YUMMY would only be considered stolen if not accompanied by the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile.
