USB and Prosecutors Ask for Hearing Delay

The Swiss bank UBS and federal prosecutors on Sunday came one step closer to settling a closely-watched legal dispute that seeks to force UBS to turn over scores of client names.

UBS and the Justice Department jointly filed legal papers asking the federal judge overseeing the case to delay a hearing on the matter until Aug. 3 to give both sides time to resolve the matter out of court. The two sides had been due to square off over the issue in a Florida court on Monday.

The filing is the first acknowledgment by the Justice Department, which has been battling UBS to turn over the names of 52,000 wealthy American clients suspected of tax evasion, that the two sides are negotiating an out-of-court settlement to the legal battle.

UBS and the Justice Department filed a joint motion to the judge, Alan S. Gold of Federal District Court in Miami, “for a stay in order to allow the two governments to continue their discussions seeking a resolution of this matter.”
