2 held on murder charges in Fla. couple's slaying
Source: ABC

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Officials in the Florida Panhandle say they're holding two men on open murder charges in the slaying of a wealthy Florida couple known for adopting children with developmental disabilities.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan says day laborer Wayne Coldiron turned himself in around 9 p.m. EDT Sunday. He says Leonard P. Gonzalez Jr. was arrested later in Santa Rosa County.

Morgan says Coldiron was friends with 56-year-old Leonard P. Gonzalez Sr., who was charged earlier in the day with evidence tampering.

Authorities say the older Gonzalez tried to paint over and hide damage on a red van spotted on surveillance video leaving the home where Byrd and Melanie Billings were shot to death Thursday while eight of their children slept.

Morgan says more arrests are expected.

Hopefully, they still use the death penalty in FL.

1. Yes, the state still murders people in Florida
more's the pity. Life without parole is a much better option for scum like that.

3. Yes! Think how they COULD work for low wages, most of which would go into a victims'
fund. I suppose that's un-Constitutional or something, maybe they should be offered somekind contracts from which they choose.

6. Prison is prison
and facing a lifetime of nothing to do but relive the crime while the life you could have had goes on without you is adequate punishment.

I say this as a survivor of murder in my family. Having the state execute the guy would have made it all worse. As it was, he died in prison.

8. If you think that than I cannot help you...
Any prison is most certainly not like any prison. The differences are stark. Regardless, some people excel in that environment.

10. Nor can I help your need for vengeance
even though you're not the victim here.

12. I just recognize when tumors need to be excized(sp?)....
So if the kids sign off on vengeance, then its okay, right? Because they're the victims.

7. They won't last. Other inmates will take them out.
This was a horrific crime. These guys have no chance in the general prison population.

4. In this case there is no tragedy....
I would also be fine with a lifetime of breaking rocks with a sledgehammer. No gloves of course.

Keep that in mind whenever you deal with WriteDown.

edit: for example, on this very thread:

Warpy: "Prison is prison and facing a lifetime of nothing to do but relive the crime while the life you could have had goes on without you is adequate punishment."

WriteDown: "If you think that than I cannot help you... Any prison is most certainly not like any prison. The differences are stark. Regardless, some people excel in that environment."

11. Yes....
Because minimum security is just like supermax. That is just so right-wing. :eyes:

16. You know, I'm getting tired of your Dick-and-Jane "see post number X" crap.
There's no mention of supermax vs. minimum security prisons anywhere except for in your post. You brought that up, and you said that "some people thrive in prison".

No. Wrong. I have had close friends who have been in those same prisons. You have no idea how bad these places really are.

17. Notice that point 6 is a direct response to post 5
where I recommended a supermax. The response was "prison is prison." Obviously, they are not.

20. And multiple murderers go to minimum security farms all the time.
Uh huh.

These guys did not rip off investors. They will do the hard time.

And even minimum security is no vacation.

I still stand by my recommendation of supermax or I like my idea of breaking gravel all day.
