White House may ask for delayed recess if (health care) reform lags

The White House on Monday said that President Obama would consider asking Congress to delay the summer break if he hasn't seen sufficient progress on healthcare reform by the August recess.

Hours after Obama told reporters that he is "going to get this done," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said that it is unlikely legislation will be finalized before the recess.

"Maybe," said a shrugging Gibbs. "I don't know."

He added: "I don't think anyone was under the illusion the whole process would be wrapped up by the beginning of August."

Gibbs said the president would, however, like to see a reform bill pass either or both the House and Senate before members leave, and if they do not the president would consider asking the leadership to delay their vacation.

1. Excellent news!
Hopefully, Obama will keep leaning on the Senate - if they drag their feet, call them out on it and make they stay through recess.

2. WE are the change WE voted for, let 'em know !
As a former health care giver, I am shocked and saddened to see what has become of health care in America. $ 1. 4 million is being spent per day in DC by the health care lobbyists so your elected representative is getting taken care of and has quality health care we pay for and can't afford ourselves for our families, I know what is deemed, defended and supported in Tennessee and Virginia as quality health care and clearly profit care comes ahead of patient care. http://www.wisecountyissues.com/?p=62 MRSA ( methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureas ) is infesting our communities because filthy, uncaring hospitals and emergency rooms are breeding them and spreading them into our schools, homes, restaurants. How many more Americans' will be diseased or die while 74 % of Americans' are begging for health care reform ? More people died in America last year from MRSA complications than AIDS. When MRSA and a flu bug start mixing, it won't be pretty and we are being infected by the very health care system we depend on and trust to keep us safe and healthy.

4. So how exactly will UHC fix MRSA?
I've seen your posts before linking to your website, and I've been through it a couple of times and read the hoorible tale of what happened to your family.

I cannot follow how the "for-profit" mechanism of the hospital had anything to do with the contraction of MRSA.

They would prefer that their patients are discharged healthy and uninfected to avoid liability and the continuing cost and risk to them by having to treat such an infection.

I just can't figure out how UHC would have prevented someone who was already in the hospital from contracting a disease that has little to do with a for-profit mechanism.

3. How about we SUSPEND Congress' health care which we provide until we get single payer ...???
We're not reinventing the wheel, folks --

Let's just remove the age restrictions from Medicare --

And, as for the details, every other nation has programs which will guide us --

they will tell us what other intelligent people have decided should be IN and what

they think should be OUT --

We could reach concensus on most of it -- and argue the few details out.

5. Keep 'em there through August
By then they'll vote for anything just to get out of town and escape the heat and humidity.

There's a reason Congress always adjourns in August -- it's called the DC weather.
