Arizona governor approves abortion constraints
Source: Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) — Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday set a new course from her Democratic predecessor on the issue of abortion, signing a measure imposing new mandates and restrictions.

One of the bill's provisions is a requirement that those who visit an abortion provider wait 24 hours before getting an abortion. The visit would have to include disclosures by doctors in person about the procedure, risks and alternatives, and the fetus' probable characteristics.

Also, an existing law on parental approval for minors seeking to end pregnancies would be toughened. In addition, pharmacists and other health care providers will be able to refuse to hand out emergency contraception on moral or religious grounds.

Former Gov. Janet Napolitano, who was governor for six years, vetoed all bills sent to her that restricted abortion rights. Brewer replaced her in January.

the above very simply and plainly explains why reproductive health care rights and access MUST be established on a Federal, not state, level. here are "States' Rights" at work, ensuring second-class citizenship for US women in Arizona.

2. Thank you so much, President Obama, for taking our
Democratic, pro-woman governor and leaving us with this rightwing idiot.

Oh, yeah, and thank you, Secy. Napolitano, for accepting his offer and leaving us with this rightwing idiot.

It's not like neither one of them knew this was gonna happen.

Don't cry for me, Arizona. I'm crying for you. And for every woman who will suffer under these new "constraints."

from completely sliding into red state hell. Now she's gone and we have a right wing legislature AND this uneducated tool as governor.

I blamed both of them.

Napolitano may turn out to be a terrific HS secy, but in getting there she left the people of Arizona in the hands of the wingnuts. We will pay the price for her success.

12. Was Brewer elected? Agree, must be federal protections for birth control/Emergency contraception ..
And, I really don't care how many people object to this because of their "god" or
their morals --

however, one way or another women have to have access -- either via hospitals or
FEDEX or whatever. And any drugstore which doesn't want to serve ALL of women's health
needs should be boycotted by ALL women who want to protect reproductive freedom for their
daughters!

14. Brewer was elected Secretary of State and succeeded
Napolitano when Obama nominated her for Homeland (in)Security.

AZ is pretty much a puke state. Janet only got elected because the pukes put up a Mormon freakazoid and even the "moderate" pukes couldn't handle that.

They don't run as a "ticket." It's two different offices, Governor and Secretary of State. AZ has nothing like a Lieutenant Governor.

16. Hopefully, the RW extremism will result in some backlash.
Sorry to hear of your plight in AZ. I thought Napolitano was a decent choice for HSSec. Her experience as a border gov should help her manage the immigration side of that job. I know it sux for you guys, but she could have a future at the national level.

And, like I said, sometimes you have to let the fundies have their way for a while to let the general population see what dipshits they really are. They sound so pious and reasonable when they spout their shit. Their actions always reveal their inner meanness, though. Kind of what happened at the national level after 8 years of BushCo and his fundie asshole supporters.

Best of luck.

This means you can bring a concealed weapon into a bar, as long as you don't drink. Law enforcement AND the bars screamed at the top of their lungs to not pass this, but Republicans did it anyway.

43. It's so stupid
For one thing, if it's concealed then how do they know if a person who is drinking has a gun? By the time they would know somebody could already be dead. If this state keeps heading south the illegals won't even have to worry about crossing the border because Arizona will already be in Mexico.

25. "and the fetus' probable characteristics"
Geez, why don't they just hand out itty bitty widdle socks with ducks on them to their patients? Better yet, the consultation with an abortion doctor should double as a baby shower.

I don't know why this particular aspect pisses me off the most. Obviously, guilt-tripping women who have ended up in a terrible situation is just wrong. Showing them cute baby pictures isn't any way to prepare them for the reality of pregnancy and potentially motherhood. It's just manipulative. But exactly how are they going to determine the baby's likely characteristics? Extract DNA from the fetus and analyze it? Enormous cost and time. Pure conjecture based on the mother's appearance? Are doctors allowed to flat out lie now? Or will they just find clippings of the cutest, most adorable and spoiled babies with precious golden curls in an "I Heart Mommy" onesie with teeny tiny New Balance sneakers and shove it in the girls' faces until they agree to go through with the pregnancy? Then what? Who will buy those onesies and baby shoes? Who will change the diapers? Who will buy the diapers? Did they say anything about that in the bill?

Didn't think so.

what I call forced-breeder states:

Arizona

Virginia: just passed stringent controls on abortion including banning access to mid and late term abortion.

And there is always Nebraska which has been teetering thanks to Nelson.

How about movement to outlaw Viagra and make circumcision and vasectomies mandatory for males who vote anti-choice? Then again, none of those things involve what pregnancy involves, even if the baby daddy is not also your own daddy or a rapist.

44. Years ago I had a friend whose daughter did that.
She and I were a couple weeks apart in age, just enough to be different zodiac signs.

Our daughters had the same first name, and were also just a few days apart in age. The family's politics were extremely liberal/progressive, especially in the area of women's reproductive rights. How she was unaware of her daughter's pregnancy, i don't know. What prevented the daughter from going to her parents with the situation, I don't know. Some kids found the baby's body in a dumpster a few blocks from her home and remembered seeing the daughter hanging around there.

Every other option was open to her. Her parents would never have questioned her choice to have an abortion, to keep the child and raise it, to give it up for adoption. They would have supported her no matter what. Why she chose that route I have no idea.
