Steve Fielding wants to convince Al Gore he's wrong
Source: NEWS.com.au

THIS is the chart climate change sceptic Senator Steve Fielding hopes will convince Al Gore that global warming is not real.

Senator Fielding is trying to score a one-on-one meeting with Mr Gore, who is in Australia promoting several environmental causes, to prove to him that climate change sceptics are right.

Senator Fielding has promised to clear his schedule for any chance to meet the former US vice-president and Nobel Prize-winning environmental campaigner. "The ball's in his court," a spokesman for the senator told news.com.au.

1. from Wikipedia
In February 2009, he told a Senate hearing that he believed divorce added to the impact of global warming because it resulted in people switching to a "resource-inefficient lifestyle"<2>.

The guy is a wackjob

2. It's called Climate Change.
Things get weird. Air temp isn't everything, during this phase. Ice melt is very scary. The ocean is warming up faster than ever expected.

8. snow
Yes, I've seen people "refute" the idea of "warming" because of areas where there has been more snow than usual. As if more snow means a season was colder. No, it just means it was wetter.

9. I remember one of the RWers talking years ago about "lake effect snow" in Cleveland ...
and he's still broadcasting in Cleveland. Massive RW ass ...

Anyway, he mentioned one time about Katrina ... he said something about how Katrina had gained strength over the Gulf of Mexico, just before hitting New Orleans.

At that point, he got something, he just didn't realize it.

I wanted to call in when he would be ranting about how much snow Cleveland was getting and how that proves that Gore is just trying to sell books ...

He realized that the hurricane picked up intensity by drawing up the warmer, moist air from the Gulf, and when it hit land, it dumped on New Orleans.

Now, when Lake Erie doesn't freeze over, that means that the water is warmer than the ice covering it ... and thus, the winds/clouds which come down from Canada over the lake pick up the warmer, moister air from the unfrozen portions of the lake ... and when that air hits land, it dumps more snow because it had more moisture ...

so ...

if Lake Erie doesn't freeze, due to the temperatures not reaching the historic lows of old, then that makes it MORE LIKELY to make more snow than less ...

3. It's a chart of global temperature for the last fifteen years.
Edited on Tue Jul-14-09 05:21 AM by geckosfeet
He is demonstrating his ignorance by plotting something like this and trying to say it means climate change is not real.

Fifteen years is nothing.

5. I'd love to chat with Al Gore, too. That means the ball is in his court now. Right?
And, if he doesn't show up, that means he's chicken, right?

Heaven help us, these people are loons!

human activity.

Hey, as long as we don't have to change our personal behavior or economic activity, what does it matter? The climate is changing, but sun flares are causing it. The climate is not changing after all. Potato, potahto.

Seems like the man is unraveling.

Family First Senator Stephen Fielding is under fire from the scientific community over his new-found belief that solar flares - not human activity - might be responsible for climate change.

Fresh back from a study tour of climate change in America, Senator Fielding says he is now doubting the science on the links between global warming and carbon emissions.

Climate scientists here say Senator Fielding has been misinformed by American climate change deniers and revisiting the solar flare theory is a wasting valuable time. "

Senator Fielding has promised to clear his schedule for any chance to meet the former US vice-president and Nobel Prize-winning environmental campaigner. "The ball's in his court," a spokesman for the senator told news.com.au.
The spokesman has said Mr Gore is aware that Senator Fielding holds a crucial vote in Parliament and that any major green schemes - such as the Government's model to reduce carbon pollution in Australia - essentially rely on his support.

"(Mr Gore) said 'look, the schedule's tight but hopefully we can work something out'," when Senator Fielding approached yesterday for a meeting on the issue, the spokesman said.

<snip>

It is the same graph Senator Fielding showed Climate Change Minister Penny Wong when the pair met to negotiate on the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, which will set a price on carbon emissions.

"The Government needs to explain to the Australian people why global temperatures have remained steady over the last 10-15 years despite skyrocketing man made carbon emissions," Senator Fielding said on his website.

Senator Wong and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd have set a targets of cutting emissions by five to 25 per cent by 2020. Mr Gore said that was not enough.

I assume that is bullshit? I haven't really checked. The poles and Greenland continue to melt at a pace far faster than anticipated.
Odd that he would champion doing nothing after the weather Australia has been experiencing.

13. it's a breathtaking claim, because this stuff is measurable
and the data shows definite warming.

Right wingers are nothing if not masters of the Big Lie. I think it's because they are the kind of people who believe reality is fluid and comports to their own wishes. I wish there was no global warming, therefore there is no global warming.

People who are not only stupid but also greedy and cowardly will be the death of the planet. Our fate is in the hands of incompetent nutballs who don't want to make a "sacrifice" and whose way of life depends on maintaining the status quo of wasteful stupidity.

15. This man is an environmental CRIMINAL
Yes, IMHO he is a criminal. By pushing such blatantly false nonsense, he is attempting to stop action that is desperately needed. If he had his way, BILLIONS of people would die over the next century. That is far worse than Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Rwanda, and Darfur combined.

I'm surprised people here are just insulting the messenger instead of proving the messenger wrong. That's a right wing tactic.

AGW/Climate Change is a topic where critical thinking and disinterested evaluation (which we apply to other topics without trouble) can bring the most vicious wrath down on your head in moments.

Which tells you something about how the opinions were acquired in the first place.

We should be able to meet these kinds of challenges with ample science. Nastiness and dehumanization are features of religious conflict, not scientific disagreement.

New Scientist explains that the apparent drop in global temperatures in the 1940s and 1950s was probably due to high industrial emissions of sulfate aerosols... but once sulfate aerosols were connected to acid rain, their emissions were better controlled, and the temperature started rising again.
