Madoff's new home: Atlanta

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Bernard Madoff, otherwise known as federal prisoner no. 61727-054, has been transferred to the medium security prison in Atlanta, according to the government's prison Web site.

Ironically, Madoff's new home once housed Charles Ponzi, the namesake of the scheme to which Madoff pleaded guilty on March 12.

It was not immediately clear if Atlanta will be Madoff's permanent home. U.S. Penitentiary Atlanta has a detention center for pre-trial and holdover inmates, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. As of last Thursday, the facility housed 1,949 inmates.

If Atlanta is Madoff's final home, then he probably won't have access to the adjoining prison camp, which is minimum security. Inmates generally prefer minimum security for better safety and quality-of-life, but such facilities are barred to inmates with sentences of 10 years or longer, according to prison consultants.
