In Possible Iran Signal, Israeli Boats Cross Suez
Source: ABC News/AP

In a possible signal to Iran, Israeli boats sail through Suez Canal en route to Red Sea

Two Israeli warships sailed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday, Israeli and Egyptian officials said, a move that appeared to be a new signal to Iran that Israel's reach could quickly extend to its archenemy's backyard.

The Suez Canal is a strategic waterway linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, the gateway to the Persian Gulf. Use of the Egyptian-controlled canal means Israeli naval vessels could reach waters off Iran in a matter of days, instead of taking a much longer route around Africa.

Israeli vessels regularly use the canal. But what is noteworthy in recent weeks is that the navy's moves have been publicized, albeit unofficially, by Israel.

Two of Israel's Saar class missile boats crossed through the Suez Canal and into the Red Sea, Israeli defense officials said. Speaking on condition of anonymity because the move was not officially publicized, they said it was connected to "the navy's recent activities around the Red Sea."

1. I would love to observe on an Israeli naval vessel.

For some reason, I have this mental image of a very professional crew, both in working skillset and in deportment. I don't know quite how to put this without putting down the US Navy, but I perceive that the Israeli vessel isn't manned by guys who have rubber testicles and racing stripes on their Mustangs and prison-chic tattoos on their bodies.

7. You could probably find videos of them easy enough on the net

I've seen them up close in person. They are tiny but able. Conscripts mostly but then what able bodied person in Israel isn't a citizen soldier ?
They are not like the Iranian bajis that get called up to defend the theocracy for $200 day loyalty pay against domestic enemies.

oh
Pacific islanders would find your tattoo comments a bit on the juvenile side.

just saying,
they were ancient mariners with sailing and navigation traditions all but forgotten. You should read up on how they sailed the pacific by "feeling" where the islands were located

the Iranian squadron probably ran out of funds and headed home some time ago.
And Israel is just on manuevers to say "boo" and sniff the sea bed below the locations transited by the Iranian ships
