Sanford’s office couldn't locate missing governor
Source: The State

E-mails, phone calls outline efforts to contact, cover for AWOL leader

Gov. Mark Sanford’s chief of staff, Scott English, called the governor’s cell phones 15 times during the governor’s secret trip to Argentina to visit his lover last month. But the governor never picked up.

Meanwhile Sanford’s communications director, Joel Sawyer, worked to minimize the fact the governor had been out of touch with his staff for about four days.

Records released Monday show Sawyer juggled e-mails and media calls from around the nation, giving a consistent message that was later proven to be untrue.

Those records also show Sanford declined a dinner invitation from a company looking to expand its business in South Carolina because Sanford planned to be in Argentina that day.

1. This is the real scandal--the real crime--not whether or not he was planking some woman...
...other than his wife.

This man, head of state for the Stare of South Carolina and Commander in Chief of its National Guard, disappeared and no one could contact him for days.

Yet, he sill continues to draw an impressive paycheck with all the perks while many of us in Anytown, USA, are out-of-work, looking for work, or underemployed, and who knew well enough not to go AWOL from an important post.

8. Oh, I don't know..."Gross Hypocrisy" comes to mind...
Don't forget this is the Party of Morality, the Party of Personal Responsibility, the Party of Family Values, the Party of Fiscal Responsibility, the Party of Strong Defense...etc.etc.etc.

Now, a married GOP governor slips out on the public dime without telling anyone where he's going, to go plank a mistress leaving his staff and the SC National Guard wondering what to do in case of an emergency or disaster...

"Gross Hypocrisy"

10. absolutely.
I asked my SC sister the other day, "It's six pm. Do you know where your Governor is?"

He walked away from his job. Away from his security detail. Without informing the Lt Governor, his staff, or the rest of the government. He went to a foreign country, where he was unavailable. He didn't inform the American embassy or the foreign government, as is customary for Governors to do.

He could have been kidnapped and held for ransom. His plane might have gone down and no one would know. If there were a SC state or regional emergency, response would have been delayed for hours while they figured out who had the authority to respond to it. Absolutely nuts and irresponsible -- I don't see why anyone in South Carolina is putting up with it. I'm livid and I don't even live there.

4. whether he was screwing around on his wife is frankly no business of mine or anyone else....
but going AWOL..... wtf. you don't just take off and not tell anyone where you are going. especially if you are the governor of a state. And the idea that people think he should stay governor in light of his apparent lack of concern for anyone but himself in this matter..... just boggles the mind.

5. and 2 media outlets wanted to "protect" him !!! Sheesh...look at this.
Way down on the State site story:

A staffer with The Washington Times wrote in an e-mail that “if you all want to speak on this publicly, you’re welcome to Washington Times Radio. You know that you will be on friendly ground here!”

On June 23, a Fox News Channel correspondent wrote to Sawyer, “Having known the Governor for years and even worked with him when he would host radio shows for me — I find this story and the media frenzy surrounding it to be absolutely ridiculous! Please give him my best.”
